I had bought the original game back in 2002 and I don't remember it being that crash-prone. The version I bought here has the annoying habit of crashing very often (every couple minutes): Game suddenly freezes, then I'm back in Windows. No error message.

For the record, Win11, installation from downloaded installer (no galaxy), on E:\Games\Morrowind. I've tried WinXP compatibility mode, no difference.

I'm assuming it is due to running under Win11. Is this a know issue?
And is there something I can do about it, except hitting Quicksave every 20 seconds?... :-(
Morrowind doesn't have a problem with Win11, compatibility mode is not necessary. For a more detailed analysis more information would be required.
A couple of potential explanations (there are more):
- Missing or corrupted files.
- Mods.
- Savegame incompatibilities (because they are based on different mod configurations, for example).
- Registry conflicts (due to incomplete earlier de-installations).
In addition, quick saving is said to corrupt savegames occasionally (I myself don't use it).

Hmm, GOG doesn't send notifications for replies, so I missed yours. Sorry.

Strange to get that on a fresh install. I only bought the game a couple days ago...

That been said you might be on to something, because I uninstalled/reinstalled the game and now it seems to be stable (not entirely sure, Real Life is back and I didn't have too much time to play).

Fresh install, new game.

Never been installed on this computer. Last time I played it was 20 years ago... :-D

I suppose it corrupts itself (i.e. the quicksave file), not the other (normal) saves? Nevertheless that's good to know, thanks.
Let's hope it remains stable.

I just listed a couple of common crash causes (applicable to your installation or not). The good news for you is that Morrowind is not less stable on today's PCs than it was 20 years ago.

Your reply sounds like it was a missing or corrupted file indeed. There are many reasons why this could happen. A PC crash unrelated with Morrowind, an "abnormal" termination of the Morrowind task (which may damage one file which then causes the subsequent crashes), a somewhat corrupted savegame when loaded again (it would affect savegames based on the corrupted one, too), ... Of course, corrupted savegames couldn't cause new games to crash. By the way: Do you use alt-tab while playing Morrowind? Don't - it will crash Morrowind (and possibly corrupt files)!

You might consider installing the Patch For Purists and the Morrowind Code Patch (with default settings). Both are not absolutely required, but they fix a number of (mostly gameplay) issues, and "are said to" improve stability overall, while not changing the gameplay. I use this odd wording, because I myself have used these two unofficial patches since they became available many years ago, and don't remember what exactly they fix (for details, check the Morrowind section of uesp.net, or the patch descriptions directly).
On the other hand, I do remember that Morrowind was never crash-prone on my PCs (even before these patches became available), especially after the final official patch was released.
And the MCP enables additional resolution settings in the launcher options window.
