I was wondering if this game could be played on the controller or only keyboard/mouse?

The game does not have any practical controller support. It technically does, but it's impossible to use with X-input. The NorthernUI mod adds controller support. If you want to use a controller without the other knickknacks that come with the the mod, use NorthernUIAway.

I cannot tell you how many hours of pain (not to mention downloading crappy virus-infested "game controller software") you just saved me
