You can get quests from nobles/merchants/townies and raise your reputation with their associated factions in this way, but does that actually have any benefit?

Members will like you more. That means they're more likely to give you directions, information or quests. It might even lower prices but I'm not really sure about that and it doesn't take long for money to become meaningless anyway.
