Anyone know the process for updating Daggerfall Unity GOG Cut?

Usually GOG Galaxy will download and update games as updates are availble. I understand this is not a retail game, and may not receive the same perks, or updates may not always be posted to the Galaxy que.

Anyway, when I launch the game I get a small message in the console bar at the top of the screen saying and update is available but it is gone so fast I cannot see the web address.

I've searched online for the official webpage for the game, or any updating mirrors and I simply can't find anything. Anyone have a link to a page for this game?

You can download the latest release from here.
You will also need the game files: follow this guide.

Ok. I downloaded the latest version, but I want to patch my Daggerfall Unity GOG Cut, with my saves intact, not create another install of Daggerfall Unity. Is this possible?

Can I unzip the package into my existing Daggerfall Unity GOG Cut install without damaging the GOG Cut mods and my savegames?

I think you have two options (which are not mutually exclusive, by the way - you can do both):
- Stick with the Daggefall GOG Cut. Then you better leave updating it to GOG (both Galaxy and offline versions).
- Create and maintain your own Daggerfall Unity (DFU) installation. This means installing DFU and all mods you are interested in yourself. These may be exactly those contained in the GOG Cut (see game description) or different ones. After the first installation you would be responsible for mod compatibility, and for finding and installing updates of DFU and mods yourself.
(Of course, you can have two independant installations, GOG Cut and your own, and you can mix the two options: start with the GOG Cut, but maintain it yourself - in this case, you would have to tell Galaxy to not update the GOG Cut, if you use Galaxy.)

The most recent DFU version can be found on the DFU website, and most mods on the Nexus site (I recommend to browse the DFU forum for mod information, it contains links to both mods on Nexus, and mods not available on Nexus).
Savegame compatibility is never automatically guaranteed, not for DFU and not for DFU mods (read update / patch notes). As long as you use the GOG Cut, you can at least expect potential savegame incompatibilities to be highlighted in the GOG patch notes. With that said, I would be very surprised, if DFU savegames would be made unusable after a DFU update. I wouldn't say the same for DFU mods: For one, they might not work after a DFU update anymore (unless and until the modder updates them), and an update of one mod may be incompatible with another mod.

Thanks a lot Greywolf1, you explained everything very clearly!

I think I am going to stick with letting GOG update the GOG Cut and play it as it is. Honestly I haven't had any issues at all with the game except for "player controlled" fast traveling, it will eventually crash after a few minutes of running through the wilderness at 40x speed.

I am just enjoying this game so much. I was a HUGE fan of Morrowind and have 100s and 100s of hours in that game across my old computer and my original Xbox. Playing Daggerfall with the Unity GOG cut is a great experience.
You're welcome.
Sooner or later (and with more experience), you'll probably want to have a look at what other DFU mods are there - Nexus is a great source for DFU mods. You may also want to disable one or several mods of the GOG cut. There is nothing wrong with adding to and / or disabling mods from the GOG Cut - but bear in mind that savegames may become unplayable when you do it. In addition, I don't know what a GOG Cut update does with added or disabled mods - the added ones may be deleted or not (and may have to be re-enabled), and the disabled ones are likely to be re-enabled, I suppose. Just check.
According to other players, the GOG Cut Updates reset the keyboard configuration, too. I myself don't play the GOG Cut (I use my own configuration), but many players seem to be unhappy with the default key assignments of the GOG Cut.
Lastly, the GOG Cut appears to be graphics-oriented - which is fine for people who like this mod selection. But there are many other mods affecting the gameplay and other non-graphical things. If you're interested in this kind of modifications, too, again, go to the Nexus site, and / or have a look at the DFU forum.

PS: You mention Morrowind. It's the game I've spent more time playing than any other game. At first the base game, then with mods and with the expansions. And then I removed most mods again, either because of mod conflicts, or because they lost their attractivity for me (compared with the original game + DLCs). Today I use less than 5 mods and the (unofficial) code patch. I wouldn't be surprised if my preferences for playing Daggerfall went in the same direction, eventually (I still play and enjoy the classic unmodded Daggerfall game, without DFU).

Have fun!
