Just rerolled and leveled up a little.

If I try to travel any distance other than the next town I die. (around five days or less)

I am not diseased / cursed etc...I have even tried to get healed / cured at a Temple or quaffed a potion. Healers say I'm healthy and nothing to cure. The background to my character is 'aqua' as per the manual description of 'healthy status'

I seem to remember being able to fast travel from one region to the other without issue in previous games.

The only stat I noticed that decreased was fatigue.

I did as you suggested and I could travel again. I should have tried it before posting. I guess its a glitch in the game
