I was wondering what spells do you guys use when fighting? I'm pretty much focused on 1st tier of magic (with random scrolls found in the dungeons) and I use only few of them. So... is there any archmage?

If not for the karma points I would prefer chaos or necromantic magic, but for now only three spells I use notoriously are Magic Missile, Magic Armor and Magic Sword (or something like that). They're useful even for commanders with low spellpower. There is also Haste, perfect for slow moving units, but it's my secondary long term goal to get it.

My Archmage just turned into the nightmare of all unfriendly inhabitants of the entire shard he lives on.
But my favorite Spell is the one that gives Astral Power to a unit which actually means it can move twice each turn and gets a major Stamina bonus as well.

That's especially nice for my rampartly raging tamed unicorn...
A lot of good spells out there...

On first level Magic Shot is basic and invaluable for taking out specific dangerous enemies (like Ghosts!!!!!!).

I'm also a big fan of Slow/Web to keep strong enemies out of the fight until I've dealt with the rabble (or Sleep once you get second level).

I never really use Bless/Curse/Magic Sword/Armor because they only help one unit and the units this early in the campaign are just not that good... Still Astral Energy is fun, and I guess all those spells become more interesting as you get better units. Also I love when I find scrolls of the third level "Mass" variants of all these spells!

On second level I'm just loving Summon Gargoyle/Stoneskin/Rain of Stone - as well as Sleep as mentioned earlier.

For higher levels I can't say yet as the smattering of scrolls I've found gives me little understanding of their relative power, but Fireball was FUN! Also I'd love that Dragonform scroll. Only level 4 scroll I found was Armageddon - which was not so fun :p As name implies a lot of damage to EVERY unit on the battlefield.

but you could use a derivate form of one of my favorite HOMM 3 tactics.

Send in a Highly resistant Mage with one unit.

1) Transform the Unit into a dragon with 100% Immunity
2) Do your Armaggedon thing.
3) ....
4) Profit.
hmmm spells i used so far and liked:
Summon phoenix (level 4 and awesome if you have summoning - he becomes like level 12 or so .. 80hp 40damage flying and resurrection)
Timestop (level 4 .. gives all your units that had their turn a second turn)
create golem (level 3... like the phoenix but a little weaker)
fireball (level 3 ... damage to 7 tiles - awesome)

i forgot;
polymorph (level 4 .. turn an enemy into a goblin for four turns... even the hero- totally broken)
