Does this have a random map creator/generator like in Civ/Alpha Centauri, or is there only a campaign?
The campaign is a series of random maps strung together by the storysetting, your karma, relations to other Lords and the grand area strategy plane, its not like the scripted predesigned campaigns of similar games. But it does have a single random map mode, too.
Replayability is unreal, I have basically been playing nonstop since release. The other games of this type I have rarely played longer than a few weeks at a time. This just keeps on giving.
Very cool, in that case I think I'll pick up the remake. Can you change the setting for the random map? i.e. world size, number of AI

No not really.

You could edit the base files with mods but the outcome would have unintended game balance issues so I don’t recommend it.

Warning: expect to struggle... this game is hard!

Game difficulty is a broad spectrum but it’s not like Dragon Age where you should go straight into nightmare because Bioware didn’t want to upset the little kiddies. As an experienced player of strategy games you should begin at beginner difficulty & expect to get handed your rear end repeatedly.

Yes of course you can change the world size and number of enemies, along with more detailed map generation settings.
The random maps are fully customizable.

In the campaign, the only thing you can change (without editing the data files) is the difficulty, although you also have access to certain features that aren't available in random single-shot maps, such as the astral energy/advantage system.
So I'm guessing the campaign can be played over and over again?
Hope these features carry over into the new one coming out.

Old game mechanics should be there in the remake, it's supposed to be more of a graphical and UI overhaul. There ARE new mechanics (like movement in combat may cost 2 stamina in certain shards instead of 1 or other similar effects) and new terrain types like deserts.

I've watched beta LP's and did not really like the new fortress multiscreen UI, Original is much easier to use with everything in one screen. There were also number of broblems that are hopefully fixed by release or in patches.

Oh and you can even save the game in remake :-p, you can't in original. Original autosaves every turn (usefull as game does crash on occasion) and upon exit of the game.

The Campaign Game is open-ended, with 12 possible outcomes (not counting the one where you die and have your Being torn asunder, I assume!). Unlike other TBS Fantasy titles (Heroes of Might & Magic, King's Bounty, etc.), the Campaign game really is open-ended.

It's NOT "on rails"
. The evolution of the storyline depends a lot on your own karma (they dynamics of which are not real well documented) and some on in-game responses to various events that come up. Unlike other TBS fantasy titles, this one is really about "participating in the story (however it ends)" rather than "overcoming all the challenges to come to the conclusion that represents winning".

In Genesis, the campaign game moves VERY slowly compared to other titles and can be brought crashing to a halt. MotBW seeks to provide "streamlined campaign play", but until we see a fully polished production release, we won't know for sure how well that works.
Hey! Are we talking about Genesis? Or MotBW Beta?

Presumably Genesis, but MotBW shouldn't be much different aside from the campaign progressing more quickly. (The Genesis campaign can turn into a nearly 100-astral turn marathon.)
