I just completed my most recent shard, and found my alignment had changed from Dishonest to Evil. I was wondering what could have caused this, as I usually take care of my subjects during random events. I'm not sure what else I did that could have caused this change. Any ideas?
Maybe they didn't like you.

Did you used Necromancy?
Or summoned evil Imps or did your troops consist of cutthroats and their ilk.
You know how it goes.
Keeping bad company is bad for your reputation.
Oh. I summon imps all the time. That affects alignment too? If so, that's pretty cool lol.
I don't know for sure, but they're are called "evil creatures" and I read somewhere from someone Russian enough to understand the manual that having evil creatures in your party makes you a evil person yourself.

Is it possible to return to a good alignment at this point?
Heck, I don't know...
The dark path is always easier

and they've got cookies!

Well, let me think. If I ever want to become good, well make "good" Roleplay choices and buy more paladins.
Raising undead and summoning demons do lower your karma. If you rely on necromancy and fiends too much, that's a quickest road to hell.

Casting Exorcism and White Magic spells improve your karma a little bit, so technically you might try spamming them to become "good" again. But they only give 1 karma point per casting, while some evil spells can drain up to 7, so that might take you a loooong time.
Thanks. Road to redemption, here I come :P
Slightly annoyed at this system, since I've been trying to be a do-gooder, but my most recent Shard decided to give me a Necromancer for my first hero, leaving me with little choice but to use it - or forfeit the battle - as the first rounds seem crucial to long term success.

Still loving the game.
Oops, no wonder I am evil, always trying the best for my folks, but have been conquering the shards with my Imps and Barbarians. :D
I don't think I can go back, I just learned that summoned ghosts who remain in the necromancers army are extremely good (I mean powerful, not good)!

Will it affect my alignment if I bribe or negotiate with independents to acquire their land, as opposed to just slaughtering them?

As far as I can tell yes. If you bribe them or just buy their land, they'll like you more off the bat. If you decide to go on a bloody rampage and kill them to take it, they'll be less "nice" to you from the start.

This probably affects your alignment a bit too, since it's how you're "dealing with the other races" so to speak. If it negatively affects their mood by razing their village, then it'll likely negatively affect your karma.

I've turned from Just to Clever... does that means I'm Chaotic Good? :D

I tend to use these 'let people take bribes' options in game, but normally I'm all goody two shoes.

Nope, Clever is just one of the higher suffixes of good characters; personally I think that it might be a mistranslation.
I found out that letting your warrior hero plunder a Goblin/Orc village actually has a negative effect on your karma despite them being an evil race ^_^

I let him sit there for twelve turns plundering their village in the swamps as an experiment, and I started to get some pretty bad rep from doing so =P

My most recent shard I've been jumping from Just, to Good, to Merciful, to Clever in a fairly random manner while spending the most time in Good or Clever.

Of the things I tend to do most often (Save for the occasional experiment, like plundering an Orc village or seeing what selling corpses to necromancers would do)

-After raiding a Thieves Guild, I accept their 200g bribe.
-I've never once ordered adventurers or guards to attack a dragon when one settles in the area.
-I've only once mixed Shamans and Bowmen, and did so throughout the entire 1st shard.
-I never sell my population to those foreign traders.
-The legalizing bribes in trading I've always accepted.
-In my last shard, I defeated one local lord and while the second was cowering in his castle (Literally, he never left it for nearly 40 turns) I got a lot of "Should we scavenge this unoccupied battlefield?" events, which netted a lot of rare stuff. Most of the time I rewarded the searchers.
-When druids come threatening me about my sawmills, I usually give in to their demands (And rebuild the sawmill a turn later.)
-I always reward my healers
-Typically, when a freelance hero offers to explore something, I just leave them be even if they don't find anything. If they return garbage, once so often I'll chase 'em out, but nothing more.
-When the young magician wanting to use undead to steal goods comes around, I confiscate the loot (It's usually crap you can buy in your capitol) and throw him in jail while rewarding the guards. The magician wanting to overthrow the government I execute every time.
-I don't often demand half the loot from wandering adventurers, usually just letting 'em wander off, but when they do fork half it over I just state "Sorry, it's the law."
-When a random hero kills off a lot of sorcerers or trolls or whatever, I usually bless him.
-Inquisitors... 7 times out of ten I wage war with them, and once I decline their [demand] to interrogate people once they never stop coming! When I do let them in, they anger my population -a lot- but still never stop coming.
-When that chalice event comes in, I usually hold a tournament if I can afford it then bless the knight who brings it back.

In my view, some things like scavenging the empty battlefields would reduce karma a bit, but I dunno. I've managed to get away with using a demon ritual to grab a relatively powerful evil unit from it, and I stayed at Merciful. I guess all things in moderation are acceptable?
