Really.. the more I play it, the more I'm amazed. Just lost the campaign because that guy Doh-Norr or whatever his name attacked my shard and I lost. I lost 1 shard over the previous 12. I'll have to start again..
It's addictive, I'll give you that. It also has a beautiful visual design (and thank FSM, no 3D sh#t).

I just resent the lack of the save feature, which makes the game unduly hard.
I'm not sure yet, even one month of binge playing is not enough to make that statement. But I am close to saying that is the best Fantasy 4x ever.
It is definitely incredible that one guy came up with this, here we have all these million $ studios making all kinds of crap and then BAM out of nowhere comes this game. Its too bad that most people like action crap, or this would be selling millions.
It's the only game I've been playing since I bought it about a month ago. It reminds me of a much more in-depth HoMM3, which is insane considering one guy did most of it. I hope it makes Alexey Bokulev a millionaire.

Every time you conquer a shard, "save" your progress by making a copy of the save directory. for organization purposes I keep them all in a subdirectory called "save - previous versions" and each time I make a new copy I name it something like "025 - 27 shards, Ul-Dagan encountered"
The first number is the save number (in order), then shard count at time of save, then a summary of what changed plotwise so i know where each save is, relatively speaking.

Also, next time kill Doh Gor :) it also takes just one shard victory. And there are special rewards for beating him.
I tried to conquer Doh Gor around turn 20, he defeated me before I got a hero to level 10! This was on competent.
It's at least very good! I'm pretty addiced since I got it, other tha Eador I'm just playing a bit of FTL as well.
It's not that surprising that a singel guy could make a better game than just money- look at Dominion 2-3, and the Geneforge/avernum series...

Yeah, I do make backups of the save directory, but I'd like a more atomic save - before a battle, to be precise. Making a game unduly hard doesn't make it fun, for me. I like searching around, discovering. Games that are made harder than necessary remind me a bit of the old arcade games with "gotcha" points - places where you had to jump or shoot or do something similar, but very hard to pass. Did not make the game fun, just hard to finish.
In the remake, iron mode is no longer mandatory (it is a possible mode you can switch on, but no longer mandatory)
You can copy the game folder while playing in a shard too. I don't think it's possible to do so while a turn is resolving (with battles and whatnot), but you should be able to do so during the normal command-issuing phase. It's probably best to exit the game before doing this just to make sure there isn't anything in use.

Sure, you could just use the "Into the Past" feature, but this method doesn't cost you any fame.

Sometimes I had to terminate the Eador process because of 'new turn freeze', and it did count it as reversion in the end. So I think if you do that within shards it still costs you fame.
Ugh, I was attacked and it says I can by banished if I lose this fight? Is that true? I did not back up my saves, so if I lose this one, my campaign will be over?

This should work: make a copy of your save directory NOW! If you lose the battle, you should be able to exit EG and go back and "Continue".

I'll try it. Hopefully it will work. And even more hopefully it won't be necessary.
I think option to completely lose by losing one map is not good thing in TBS with no saves. To lose tens of hours and be forcef to start with no buildings again? Not my concept of fun.
It is pretty hard to lose on your own shard, though. You get all the boni you have for free, and often other masters will help you by sending free stuff, very powerful free stuff.
