So I was curious how I could "force" a ranged attack with a unit that could use both range and melee. I'm very early in and I'm having a problem using my Spearmen. There are times when an enemy is within melee range (say a square or two away from my spearman) and I want to used their ranged attack - however the game defaults to melee and I can't figure out how to "force" a ranged attack. Is it even possible? Oddly enough, there are other times (when I'm sure blocking terrain or some other strange game rule is in effect) that ranged pops up as the only option even if I'm within a short distance of the target. But more often than not it's the other way around - my unit COULD advance to melee, but I'd rather it not and I can't figure out how to force that ranged attack - any help would be great!

Also, just from my short time with the game - this thing is wonderful! My post was about Genesis - I debated holding out for "the pretty" that was MOTBW for a while and I can't help but be glad that I'm playing the smooth, uncumbersome original version, no matter how sexy that world map looked in MOTBW!
You can't force ranged attack in the melee range.
You can force melee attack by using ctrl+click.
I think you observe two different cases - shooting from hill, shooting without ammo.
Hill gives +1 to range, so you see that one spearman can shoot, while another can't do the same from similar distance.
They have very limited amount of ammo, so some of them can shoot only once. Green bar in info screen.
Thank you much, and thanks for the additional info as well (especially the CTRL command and the notion of ammo - I saw the description of the slingers and assumed it MIGHT be just flavor about them "always being able to pick up rocks" - and promptly forgot to check for ammo on other units!)
