Basically wondering whether once I begin to besiege an enemy stronghold I can somehow cancel it and send my hero and his army somewhere else (in this case to prevent my stronghold from being captured). I can't find any way to do this.

As far as I know, it's unfortunately not possible.

Quite stupid, if you ask me.

Umm I cancel sieges all the time, just select the hero and send him to a friendly province.

Yeah, you can move a hero to break off the siege, but he can't move into an enemy province, only a friendly one.
