In my current game - after a string of rather pathetic losses (including one where the AI conquered MY third ring from neutrals) I got rather lucky. With a bunch of cash in reserve I got a 'trader of rarities' from whom I bought treant acorns, golem ingots and manticore eggs!

While I would love discussion on which of these is better - they all are pretty diverse in their abilities and exceptionally strong for their tiers - I needed some information on golems.

Golems (and their junior version gargoyles) cannot be healed! Now, when these are summoned, it makes sense as you are expected to 'use' them up. But as a regular part of an army seeing regular action the health gets chipped away every battle; especially since these guys are supposed to be melee tanks!

Any tips? I really thought about getting a mage with golems and gargoyles in his army; very thematic!

I noticed that, too, Golems and Gargoyles just slowly die...not very useful. Good to have slugs waste their ammo at them.
Commander/warrior dual class gives regeneration at 20th level. You can prolong battle and wait while your damaged units regenerate(easy way - let someone weak attack unit with "First aid"). Also, ability "regeneration" gives additional 10% regen between turns. Though I don't know, would this regeneration from hero count - haven't tried this sub for ages.
@Jamotide I did go back and clear out quite a few slug infestations after I got the golems...

@Gremlion the +1 from regeneration isn't that great! A typical fight involves far more damage than regeneration can heal!

Plus in this one I already went Commander > Scout - though if the regeneration bonus actually works I can ditch a healer in the future (with spells for emergency heals) and free up one more slot to add to fire power!

Incidentally the golem is actually completely immune to spells (even friendly ones) so I can't even buff them with spells. Given their low speed they don't end up that useful! I guess I was spoiled by my mage who can summon golems pretty much across the battle field due to his levels in summoning power.

Yep, summoned golems are very nice as meat shields (at least if you summon them close to the enemy formation), but they just aren't particularly good as standard additions to your army since the enemy will close in on you much faster than the golems can close on the enemy, and if they have the choice most enemy units will go for your squishier troops rather than the golems. Stick with summons for golems, and use your tier-3 slots for more useful units.
I agree!

Unfortunately it took me a lot of money to come to that conclusion. I had to build up to the building required for 'summoning' golems... while I could have actually won the game normally by then.

Just as a comparison, the other 'summon' buildings are far easier to get to and probably make far more sense economically as they have other benefits as well.
