On the topic of guards, I really like the Winged Guards you get if you build the Pegasi and Griffon buildings. They're almost as powerful as monsters, but only have 1/3 the upkeep and increase the province visibility range.

I agree, I think Winged Guards are excellent value for money, and you can be reasonably relaxed about your province's safety. At least the inquisitors will be shredded apart every time.
