Kamamura: The best army is a single, uber-levelled warrior, seriously. If you solo provinces with him, he racks up exp real fast, and after you get decent gear and a few protection spells, he becomes unstoppable. Normal troops just steal part of the exp and then inevitably die with it, while soloing warrior saves you also recruit costs.

Rezca: Yeah but the question was what *tier 1 army* you like to use best. Heroes don't count ;-)

Me? Mostly bowmen or swordmen. Sometimes I'll go Pikemen and Healer, or Crossbowmen and Healer.
I don't see *any* point in using Militiamen once you get out of the Tutorial Shard ever again, or Slingers. I'm sure there's some use for Brigands and the like, but for the life of me I can't see it (Reduced income = Do not want)

*edited to add* Inevitably die...? Isn't that a bit harsh? =)
I provideth you with a screenshot of my uber-leveled swordsman that was with me for 320+ turns and outlived and outleveled every hero on the shard ^_^

Level 27. Highest hero was mine, and wasn't even 20. Don't ask me how it happened, because I don't know - and have yet to get a common unit above 10 again (Closest I've come was a gargoyle that hit 12 before falling to a Ghoul-Spamming Commander)
I must try this single hero strategy for sure. But back to units. After few more games I decided that Swordsmen are the best level 1 units. I won most of battles with pack of them. Really tough guys.
And about thievs and this bald folks (evil level 1 units) - I do not know why they may be good too. Reduce income is really lame and this units do not look super cool to balance that. Any opinions?
on the shard i am playing right now i am trying to create an army with only leveled and medal awarded units- i think my unicorn is level 15 right now and has three medals of honor - once i am done with this i will post some screenshots (if someone tells me how to do that)
the best I ever had was a level 25 unicorn and a level 21 treant so far - but i will try to get a unit to level 30 (god bless illusionary battle)
I tried Swordsmen now and I see why you all like them, they really are tough. Perfect to soak up attacks while a scout or wizards kills off the enemies.

So,where do you get Unicorns or treants, I'm on shard 15 or so and have never had either.

Kazper: That is absolutely awesome. I managed to get a Gargoyle to level 17 (and two medals) - he was virtually invulnerable, so if I had cared to grind levels instead of finish the Shard I guess he could have kept rising. He was still below my hero though.
I think I owe some of it to having access to the 2nd Circle Life magics. Unlike most of my armies, I didn't use him as a distraction or to soak up attacks from Ghouls and other nasty units once he hit 18. Started getting real cautious about him, and if he fell under 8 HP I'd have him pull back. Ah yes, and I was using a Commander/Wizard hybrid, so I could get some extra punch from Word of Life.

*sighs* What I would have given for Illusionary Battle...
That poor guy had to earn those levels the hard way XD

Still... I would like to see what those cocky necromancer AI heroes would think about a level 20 Stone Golem marching their way >:)

Mm yes, in my early attempts I loved using Create Gargoyle and Stone Rain. Worked wonders. When I found that Create Stone Golem scroll on my Scout-Wizard ... Ho boy did I unleash hell on the Master and Local Lord that were bickering with each other.

As for the screenshots? I'm taking them with Screenhunter Free edition. I've got it bound to PrntScreen because the default F10 that it was bound to before was causing issues with my laptop (It insists on not letting those F# keys work unless you use "fn" first. Is annoying)

AFAIK there is this random event in forested areas where your hero stumbles upon a Unicorn while scouting (I've only ever seen with my Scout, but I doubt it is unique to him.) and you have the option of walking away, killing it, trying to tame it, or trying to catch it.
I figure that's what nets you a Unicorn, or at least one way of doing so.

Come to think of it... There's that Injured Phoenix random event that has a very costly ritual you can perform, but there's no reward? I clicked the first option afterward because I was in a rush, rather than what I personally would have picked ("I think I liked her better as a phoenix"), but there wasn't any follow up event nor any reward.

I think it'd be a pretty broken event though if you could actually net a Phoenix out of an event for 400g and a handful of gems ^_^
