The game, of course, shouldn't delete save files but there have been some fringe cases where people have indeed lost their save game. This usually happens in cases where the game is shut off or crashes during saving. For this reason there is the backup save system, but as you mentioned the backup saves seem to be quite old. You did try to rename the backup saves (both .bin and .xml file) from backup-profile.bin & xml to just profile.bin & xml and check of they work?

hazamuth.10tons: Unfortunately in this case I don't think there is anything to be done. If the save files don't exist on your computer and they are not saved to the cloud, they are most likely gone.

hazamuth.10tons: Do you mean the title in the main menu?

hazamuth.10tons: If it is a button reading "Underworld" over the Play button, it probably just signifies that the DLC is available. If you have purchased the DLC, there is a yellow title below the main Dysmantle logo in the main menu.
