I like patformer games. I like good story. Therefore I've been recommended Dust: An Elysian Tail.

But after watching the trailer, I'm not so sure that this will be a game for me. The trailer's cliché after cliché (including the fact that the words used themselves are copypaste).

"A broken fallen land"............ "A hero"................. "A greatest army the world has ever known marches ever closer"................. "there is a legend, an oldest of Elysian Tales".................. "it speaks of a warrior who wields that very blade"... ....."you possess a rare gift"............. "you will turn the tide"....... oh and here goes another generic Hans Zimmer-esque musical cue

Seems like there's gonna be decent VA, and some comical relief.... but that's not enough.

Having recently finished Knights of the Old Republic 1 and having shelved World of Warcraft: Legion, I decided I'm not gonna submit myself to any obvious clichés anymore for a time. I want something that feels original. Like what I'm currently playing: Psychonauts. There's ol' "good vs evil" there too, but it's buried beneath a whole lot of unique ideas.

Still, I'm asking this question: maybe it's just that the trailer is shit? Maybe the game will surprise me? Convince me.

Because I remember reading a whole lot of clichéd things on the box of Legacy of Kain even though there was a really good story there, it was just marketers having no clue. Or Mass Effect Trilogy, even if the main story arc was full of derivative crap, was worth it, as it had really good world and character building (and it had awful trailers too). Could list a few more examples.

It's no Psychonauts for sure, when it comes to originality. Dust is cliché, even a bit kitschy at times, but overall nicely done. I had a good time playing, but it's more for a casual distraction than an original experience. It's a hero story, seen and done before, with light hearted aspects and if you're in the mood for one, go for it. It's one of the better of the game's genre. If you're after something new, you'll have to search further.
