Getting terrible performance (fps drops in fights with a couple enemies) regardless of in-game graphical settings

CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990wx
GPU: AMD Navi 21 Radeon RX 6800 XT
128 GB RAM

Kernel 5.15.0-58-generic (have also tried 50-generic, no diff)

I run many other games without issue, but this one is nearly unplayable. I've played it on much lower spec machines and it runs sweet.

Has anyone else run into anything like this or have any suggestions?

I had to do basically 2 things:

1. install / compile an unsigned kernel,

2. and also add the kernel command line in GRUB:

mitigations=off

NOTE that this disabled ALL the mitigations of the CPU, like Spectre, but, the difference in responseness in general, was noticeable. I think I don't need that crap. (lol)

game stopped stuttering after that. ALL games went better after that.

AND I'm running a potato-laptop: core i5 1st gen with nvidia nvs3100.
