So I played this game as a kid, again a decade ago and - again a few days ago.*

I have never figured out - nor found any reference in game - to what the Holy Symbols you find do.

NOT the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind, the Cleric and Paladin Holy Symbols. I thought holding one in the off hand might make TURN UNDEAD stronger. But can't tell or confirm.

Anyone figure that one out?

*Honestly it's not THAT good a game - just a real nostalgia itch and vindication of a 10 year old who never got past the tunnels beneath the Ivlis.

It's been a while since I played but isn't that how you cast spells?

You have the icon for the holy symbol (and ankh) on on the UI between your hands - but youd don't need anything in the inventory.

This is an Ankh item (a blue Ankh in the case of the paladin holy symbol) that you can equip in hand (doesn't attack).

Only reference I can find in the manual is in the Vampire entry - Vampires can occasionally be held at bay with a holy symbol. But I've not noticed it holding them off. (I don't think)
As far as I know those things do nothing. One paladin symbol serves as a quest item, but the others have no use.

Menzoberranzan and the two Ravenloft games have plenty of items that just create atmosphere and have no real use. Or maybe their use is to keep the player guessing. Are my spells slightly more powerful now? Who knows, let's hang onto it just in case. ;)

Sorry then. I was probably thinking of EoB
I remember those! Both from the Ravenloft games and Menzoberranzan. Like you, I thought maybe they would give a boost to Turn Undead by clerics/paladins, but if they do work that way, I didn't notice any appreciable difference. It's possible they might just be there for flavour.

No problem - thanks for reply! I think Stryx may have it right in that it's cosmetic.

Responding to 'detect magic' and being 'holdable' threw me. Zaxares may also be right about a minor buff to turn undead, but I couldn't detect one!
