I insta-bought all the gold box games as soon as they became available, as they are among my all time favorites.

One drawback is I'm not seeing how the series' interact vis-a-vis importing parties once you finish a game.

I haven't started playing yet, but once I finish, say Champions of Krynn, I don't know that the Death Knights of Krynn game sees the finished Champions folder.

Any insights as to how this interacts, or if there is anything special I need to do?

Copy all the files from the SAVE directory of the game you are importing from. Copy them to the SAVE_CH directory of the game you are importing to, Start up the game you are importing to and load the save from the previous game.
