I have wanted to play this game for a long time. Even found it cheap online some years ago, but couldn't get it to run, getting it to barely start and then crash soon afterward on a good day. Apparently this is a very common problem. Any word on whether the GOG setup has some fixes built in?
Not sure if there are any fixes, but I've never been able to get DK or DK2 to work on my current rig. But the GoG version of DK is working well so far.

Cool. With GOG games, 85% of the time it runs right away, and the other 15% of the time, there's a quick fix in the forums. I have come to expect that from GOG, but DK is especially notorious and I didn't want to get my hopes up.

Seriously considering buying it now, but may wait for a sale. Further testimonials from users with the same experience would be reassuring to me and other potential buyers, I'm sure.

Sure, if you've had a terrible time getting DK to work in the past, it would probably be a good idea to wait and see...
I have a feeling that the trouble with DK comes from trying to get the Win 95 version running on new systems. This is the DOS version and DOSBox is pretty stable already. Should be fine.

edit: And I just tested. Runs very well with the default settings. 640x480

Yeah, pretty sure it was Windows 95. "Compatibility mode" is a joke. Never did tinker with DOSBox, and GOG does it for you, so that's probably it. Thanks.
FYI, Windows 95 native games are by far the hardest to get working on modern computers. DOS stuff is almost universally supported though DOSBox and XP stuff just works.
I'm running the GOG version on XP and the only tweak I needed was to change a value in the dosbox config file to stop sound stuttering. Now it runs without any crashes or glitches, which is more than I can say about most new games (I'm looking at you, New Vegas)
