I read some things on the main forums that made me think the boxed copy was more flexible. Oddly, even on XP I can get DK to work, now DK2 has been a problem for years...

I hear talk of patches that enable GPU acceleration (not sure why that's necessary) and let you futz with the resolution (maybe someone has done higher res sprites?).
The windows version allows for the use of DirectX 5 which provides some neato visual effects. However, the DOS version does not.

The problem with the Windows version is that it won't run on x64 systems since it's a 16-bit application.

I think maybe the last time I played it I played the DOS version anyway. So unless I want to fire up a Win 98 SE VM with a virtual Voodoo card (if that's even possible yet) I guess I'll probably be sticking with the DOS version anyway. Thanks for the info.
The best way to play DK1 on windows is probably using KeeperFX, google for it.

Also yes, your boxed copy is better

There are plenty of Windows versions of games that do work on my Windows 7 64 bit computer though. Star Wars Rebellion is the one game right now that I haven't been able to get to work as of now, but that's just trying to get the game installed, other games like Myth: The Fallen Lords, Command & Conquer The First Decade (Original C&C and Red Alert), Fallout, these are all 16 bit games and they work.
