nmillar: Changing the cycles to max (which lets DosBox decide for itself what the optimum setting is)

kalirion: Actually I think "auto" lets DosBox decide, and it often doesn't decide well, while max tells it exactly that - use the maximum number of cycles possible given the system it's running on.
Nah auto and max are really similar.
(auto = 3000 cycles for real mode programs. max for protected mode games, I am pretty sure Dungeon keeper is a protected mode game, so auto and max behave identical)

I bow to the expertise of DOSBox author :)
Thanks for all the suggestions. I was using notepad on Windows Vista btw.

I managed to eliminate the choppiness by reducing the CPU speed on DOSBOX (Ctrl + F11).
I'm a total DOSBox newb, and I don't see the CNF. I have dosboxDK.conf is that the same thing?

Apparently it is, fixed it thanks for the info:)

I remembered this from when I had to do the same for Rayman Forever. Just like that game, it worked like a charm. Sometimes these conf's aren't ideal, I'm not sure why, but I'm already used to toying with them, and GOG's in general, in Linux. :P
Thanks for the fix!

I'm not experiencing the problem (maybe because I'm running WinXP..), but a friend of mine had this problem on Vista.

The fix helped, but game is awefully slow on High Res still.. :/
While this fixed my sounds issues, it created a new problem with my mouse movement. It seems very laggy like the movement isn't fluid anymore and skips a few frames. Anyone know a fix for this? Using win7
Nevermind the mouse. I just found out it make the entire game laggy :( Will have to switch back to default values unless someone can find the cause

Great solution for my problem, sound and whole game speed increased greatly. Now it's the best RTS game ever. Still ! :)
I just wanted to post to thank you for making this topic! I bought Dungeon Keeper on release and pretty much "virtually shelved" it five minutes after installing because the sound was stuttering every second.

Having had a desire to play again, I finally took the initiative to scour the forums for an answer (or was going to post a thread if I didn't find one) - thank goodness I found this one! Very quick and easy fix, and works like a charm! Thanks again!
it worked! epic

Somehow this wont work for me.
Im running Windows 7 x64 and when i start Dungeon Keeper in the DosBox the sound works normal at start. But after about 20 sec the Game constantly lagging evry 2 sec. The Sound and the Game is lagging.

I had this problem with evry game i play in the DosBox and cant find a solution. :-(

Please Help.
Running on Win 7 64-bit. Tried the compatibility for XP, didn't work.

Tried editing cycles to max, worked for the first 20 seconds, and after that if I moved the mouse at all, the game just stopped (I mean literally froze as long as I continued moving the mouse), but if i didn't move it, the game went on smoothly.
Weird thing was, I alt-tabbed out of it, played in windowed mode for about 30 seconds, and when i tabbed back in, my sound was scratching a little with every sound effect (VERY annoying), but the game ran smoothly, and I could also move my mouse as much as I wanted to.

Of course, I couldn't tolerate the scratching, so here I am, convinced that the sound is the issue, obviously because when it scratches and has poor sound, the game runs smoothly whatever I do with the mouse.

Also, when I run the "Graphic Mode Setup", my computer tells me the game is not installed (at all). I installed it as administrator, so I do not know what has gone wrong.

I use Win7 64 and had serious sound issues right after install. In 'dosboxDK.conf' I made the following changes:

I set priority=normal,normal instead of higher,normal
I set cycles=max

Also, after launching the game it is necessary for me to set the affinity to a single core... I usually set it to core 6, but any would be fine. I just prefer to stay off of '0'.

The two config changes and setting affinity to a single core resolves menu cursor issues, sound issues and lag issue for me. Setting affinity to a single core makes the greatest difference for me, but changing the priority in the config file also helps. The game runs too fast otherwise, even sounds are faster than normal. I guess it doesn't like 4.9GHz.

YMMV. Good Luck.
Sadly I have tried several options in the thread and the game got worse somehow. When it first starts it runs great the suddenly it slows down and takes forever to respond to any input
