I'm currently doing a campaign mission to kill Pureheart. I have converted two workshops, where there are multiple secret door boxes. Am I supposed to be able to use these items to build secret door free of charge?

They won't be free, but you don't have to wait for your trolls to create them. Basically your imps will be able to immediately be able to set them up.
