Is it true that GOG copy of Dungeon Keeper is a low resolution one, where there can be a higher resolution option with the original CDs?

I think the difference is that the DOS version is 320*200 and the Windows version ran at 640*480.

The version you buy here is the DOS version, though it's still perfectly playable.

well thats a huge jump, ,maybe I should wait off until I find a better way to play this game

It's a huge jump (well, over double resolution) but they are both low-res by today's standards, so it's kind of a moot point. If you want to play old games then you will have to face some low DOS resolutions. Dungeon Keeper happened to look fantastic in its era, try watching videos of people playing it (make sure it's the DOS version) and see what you think.
A few commenters mentioned that hitting Alt-R sets the game to higher (640 x 480) resolution. I remember that with original game it indeed worked. Maybe someone could also answer my questions and help me decide if the game is worth snatching here?

- Does the Alt-R switch work with the gog version?
- More importantly - is gog version working with the Dungeon Keeper Direct3D upgrade? (it was a Direct3D extension, e.g. making the textures nitoceably smoother. The game looked so much better with it) Google if you want - an updraged game should have a "Dungeon Keeper Direct3D (TM)" label at the bottom of the left panel.

ALT+R works
Use KeeperFX if you want D3D. Dungeon Keeper Windows ver has issues with modern versions of Windows. KeeperFX fixes these.

Thanks for the info. If the gog version of DK plays nice with KeeperFX and Win 7/64 - what's not to like? Or am I still missing something here?

KeeperFX , or "Dungeon Keeper Fan Expansion", is, as name implies, a fan made expansion which fixes several issues with the original DK game, allows more advanced settings etc. I don't know if the project is still alive, but it's easily enough available from numerous places.

And from what DosFreak wrote, D3D patch - the one I was interested in the most - works with (requires?) KeeperFX-extended GOG release.

As for your second question - again, if DosFreak and some of the commenters are to be believed, 640 x 480 resolution is indeed available.
Yes alt-R does indeed make a HUGE difference in the overall look of the game and it does work in the GOG version of the game.

I can confirm that Dungeon Keeper 1 runs just fine on Windows 8.1, no issues, and once i hit Alt+R i get nice high resolution, so the game is very playable today :)
when i use Alt+R it gets really slow, any solution?

Playing with the dosbox settings (CPU cycles: up CTRL+F12, down CTRL+F11 while running) might help.

If this helps not enough, DOS32a can be used as drop in replacement for DOS4GW.EXE. It is known to result for several game in a serious speed-up (e.g. Schleichfahrt)
http://dos32a.narechk.net/index_en.html

How to install:
rename "DOS4GW.EXE" to "DOS4GW.BAK"
copy the binary package of DOS32a 9.12 into your Dungeon keeper folder.
Rename "dos32a.exe" to "DOS4GW.EXE".

Worked for me. :)

EDIT:

Edit the dosboxDK.conf and change cycles=80000 to cycles=max
