There are similar threads, but none that deal with this problem in Windows XP yet.

No matter what I try, the game crashes after the first couple of intro screens. It will usually crash right after the initial "atomic" intro screen, but every once in a while it lets me get to the menu. Once I actually got a level to run, but it was a fluke, as I've been unable to reproduce it. I've tried all of the different graphics modes. The only ones that even let the game boot are DDraw and OpenGL. DOSBox won't even launch in any of the other modes. This is on Windows XP SP3.

I put a support request into GOG about this, but haven't heard back from them. It's been a while, so I figured I'd try my luck here. Has anyone had this problem in XP and been able to fix it?

Could you please post your system specs?

Also have you tried eduke32?

eduke32 actually works. I'm concerned that the version of the game I payed for doesn't work, but ultimately, I just want to play the game. Thanks for the suggestion to try eduke32!

Well eduke32 will give you the original experiance if you don't add any of the extra high res textures or anything like that. It should also run smoother then the dosbox version as dosbox handles build engine games pretty well but not amazingly.

Do you know what version of dosbox duke3d comes with? If its older then 0.74 you can download 0.74 from the dosbox site.

http://www.dosbox.com/

Install it somewhere, then just replace the old dosbox files in the duke folder with the new version.

I have the same problem and the same OS. I tried EDuke32 and the installer says it can't find a file that is on the original disk and if I don't have an original disk (which I do) I can come to gog and buy the whole game which I already have. So this is an interesting exercise in tail chasing.

I've experienced this problem in the past, before I migrated to Eduke. And I've heard of others with similar problems.

My problem had to do with the default audio emulation of dos box. The IRQ and DMA channels were conflicting and caused a crash. I had to experiment with the channels before I finally got it to work. I think I ended up having to set the IRQ to 7 and the DMA to 3 or 5. It's been awhile, so I don't quite remember.

Other people had problems with display/video settings.

Although I'm unable to recall how they fixed that issue, some google searching or dosbox forum searching might get you the answer.

Hope this points you in the right direction if your dead set on getting Duke to work in dosbox.
your best bet would be to max out your memory Dosbox is very RAM hungry like all VM's. When i used xp i used a WIN NT source port called JFDuke3D.

I have the same problem as what is listed above. I'm not using EDuke32 and it crashes after a while when the game plays the demos.
