this should be the game for me, but is it free of bugs and is it close to Escape Velocity?
In Single Player, is it only story-driven or is there free roaming (free exploration) too?
How difficult are space battles and is there a setting for difficulty?

I think it's pretty free of bugs, but I'm biased :), and I can't compare it to Escape Velocity.

It is definitely a more free roaming/exploration type of game. There isn't any set story. Things evolve depending on what you, the "monsters", and the races do in each game.

You can choose the difficulty of the sector of space, so you can make it harder or easier.

Thanks for your details Steven, I got the game, it was on sale, but ... huh... The learning curve is high... The problem I have is that the action doesn't stop while I fire up the different UIs for slots etc. It will take me awhile to figure out the best playing mechanics. I wonder how I should ever use all these menus effectively while the action is so fast-paced... :)

Yeah, it can definitely be hectic. I use the pause button frequently.
Near friendly planets you're safe more or less, only higher ranked boss NPCs can break through effectively. After reaching level 100 with one of my ships I started using carrier items often because those are good for distracting the enemy and bomber cause a lot of damage. But honestly when the missile swarm starts... that is something no allied ship can protect you from.
