Pursuits involving the Robed Figures are time-sensitive, and can eventually be failed if not completed once started!
Slightly MORE-SPOILER-y Description:
You will encounter mysterious robed figures on some of the unnamed islands between the four main outlying areas. Each will ask you to provide three specific fish, in sequence. Once started, if you take too much time between (in my case) providing the 2nd fish and coming back with the 3rd fish, the figure in question will be dead, presumably starved to death.
Without going into further specifics, the fish needed will usually be available from the main island closest to the figure. The Figure in Blue needs a fish from Devil's Spine, though, which if one is following the suggested order of islands would typically be the last place visited.
(Personally I think this kind of thing is bad form when it comes to game-design, and in a lesser game would have killed a lot of my enthusiasm to keep playing altogether. Really wish there was at least some way to re-try.)
