The "whole team of custom pawns" was only really feasible for the console version. Basically, you get one pawn per save/account, and you could register several playstation accounts for free. So, technically, you still had to level up each pawn, but you did generate RCs and had full control over equipment, build and inclinations.
The PC versions are keyed to either Steam or GoG accounts and would require one game per account (granted, you can pick up the game for a bit more than a tenner, but still, there's extra costs here).
Given that RC values can be hacked in the PC versions and the game isn't anywhere near hard enough to actually require 3 "perfect" pawns, the only reason to do so is either "bragging rights" or "because I can!". Whatever floats people's boats these days.
