The pawn system allows you to "rent" pawns from other players or randomly generated ones that the game makes. To use the online pawns (other players pawns) you will need to launch the game through Galaxy, but you don't have to to use offline pawns. Other than that there is a single (I'm pretty certain it's just the one) boss fight that uses online, but again it can be done entirely offline.

So playing offline (not using Galaxy) is completely possible and you won't really miss out on anything.

Do note that the online and offline version of this boss are different in both functionality and rewards. The online version has so much hp that you may not even see that you're making progress in the time you have for each try, on the other hand, you do get rewarded if it gets taken down while you're offline. Also, the rewards are less powerful than the stuff you can find in the DLC area.

The main reason for me to play DD:DA online is to pick up the pawns of a couple of friends and run around killing monsters.
