I'm playing a mage, and it didn't take long for the autoaim to start annoying me with how it misses if the target is at all mobile. So I looked around and found that you can press Shift for manual aim. I've been trying it out, but I can't figure out exactly how it works. Sometimes it seems like I just have to briefly tap it, other times it seems like I have to hold it down for a second, and actually firing the spell doesn't seem to have a consistent input either. I also frequently experience my aim jumping and twitching around instead of just having the game put a crosshair up and letting me aim smoothly. This can't be how the game is supposed to work, so I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Could the fact that I have a gamepad and a joystick hooked up be causing problems, even though I have the game set to use KBM controls?

I get the feeling that a manual would have really helped, but there inexplicably isn't one, so I'm kind of flying blind here.

if i recall correctly the manual is in the title menu
im reinstalling to make sure

edit:
yup its in the menu after the title screen with the options of "main menu, manual, and exit game"
if you skipped ahead to the main menu just hi the Esc button to go back

ps sorry for the delay it took a while to download the game again

which spells are you having the problems using?
the various spells have different types of targeting

some just fly to your current target ie: Ingle, and Levin

some you have to set to affect the area by moving an indicator to where you want the spell to happen Ie Comestation
shift seems to reset the targeting cursor to in front of your character

a few affect an area around the caster Ie Frazil

Boon spells will affect the party member you target (targeting will only appear on party members and shift will switch the target to selfcast and back to target mode)

also is its light attacks that give you some trouble hitting with holy boon's light attacks are homing on your target or nearest target if you aren't targeting anything, same applies to charged light and heavy attacks as well if you learned the passive for them

i hope that this wil help you and any others that have problems

after reacquainting myself with mageery i noticed that in regards to aiming it usually targets the enemy closest to the centre of view of the camera
so as enemies move around the targeting indicator shifts to reflect this and for movement of the camera angle as well

essentially for higher level spells, esp. sorcerer spells with their long casting timer bar(s) you'll have to keep track of the enemy you want to hit

looking at eh manual and keybinding options i don't see a lock target function but i thought i remember one in this game but i guess i cold be wrong, will leave an edit to this post if i find it

Edit: yeah looks like there isn't a lock on, except with magick archer's homing arrows sadly which is probably where i remembered a lock on from since i'm usually playing that class

i hope my incessant rabbiting was of some use

I figured out what the problem was.

I use a G600 gaming mouse. I wanted to put the modifier keys for skills on the mouse, because it's faster and more convenient to use those than it is to use the keyboard. The default profile for the mouse makes the mouse's extra buttons act as the numpad keys. For whatever reason, the game doesn't seem to like the numpad keys, so it made everything jump around. Changing the mouse settings to use different buttons fixed things.
