Taken from my post in the Steam Discussions*
On, at least, Windows 8.1 systems** there seems to be an issue with sound popping and staticy sound. This issue does not seem to occur in the Steam version of the game (I have yet to test the GOG version), only the Humble Store version, however for those that do experience the issue it can be fixed by:
1. Open the 'winsetup.exe' file in the main folder (path will depend on the game's destination -Steam, GOG, et al.;
2. Click the 'Advanced >>>' button in the bottom-right corner;
3. Under Sound Options, the default setting seems to be 'Default WaveOut Device'. Change that to 'Default DirectSound Device';
4. Click 'Save and Run' button and enjoy the game!

**There is a pop-up that will say MSVCR100D.dll is missing. This can be downloaded from Microsoft ( http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26999 ), however it will not be installed on systems that already have a newer version of the Microsoft Visual C++ programme. This is because Microsoft detects a newer version that is not compatible with that .dll file.
