hello doomers,

got a problem with doom and every other "doom engine" based game:

want to play the game with the same controls i used when i was a young boy: arrows for movement, right ctrl (strg in german) for shooting and right Alt (Alt Gr) for strafing........

the problem with doom and every other game with the same engine (like dark forces) cant differ between right alt and right ctrl...so every time i strafe i ll shoot too....

still got an very old version of doom and there is no such a problem...

any suggestions if and where i can get my old config?

the other problem is the dos box window...got an widescreen monitor and i allways got an black bar on bottom and top of the screen....tried to change the dosbox resolution via the gog dosboxconfig but it didnt change anything(same screen size and resolution than before)

thx alot for any help ;)

btw: my old doom version is the old DOS version...not the win 95 edition...had the same control problems with the win 95 cd version..

I had a similar issue with Archimedean Dynasty where you have to press both Left Ctrl and Right Ctrl and a number to activate a cheat. The problem is that DOSBox doesn't seem to register the Right Ctrl as being any different to the Left Ctrl. In the end I just used the DOSBox keymapper to map an unused button to both Left and Right Ctrl keys.

So, in answer to your question, I believe the issue may lie with DOSBox itself and not your config.

As a possible resolution to your issue, you could try using the Chocolate Doom source port. This port is designed to play the game as it was originally, just using a native Windows program. This would also work around your DOSBox video issue, too.

thx for your answer but the problem is even in the ingame doom setup (the bluescreen config window)...when u customize your controls it says ctrl when i use the right alt and the right ctrl...the game itself seem to make no difference between those keys...

and where do i find the sweet chocolade?^^

Hmm, just a shot in the dark, but is DOSBox configured for your German keyboard?

Right here. Definitely recommended if you want to play the game exactly as you remember it, but your mileage may vary; most people nowadays use ZDoom or an offshoot of that for higher resolution, improved mouse-aim and such.

Also, DOSBox seems to have trouble with non-standard keyboard layouts, on my laptop it doesn't recognize certain keys for example. So you might want to try out the built-in keymapper first, to see if that can get you around the problem.

Yes, it would be the same in the Doom setup too. As I said, the issue likely lies within DOSBox itself, not Doom. I don't know if you can tweak the DOSBox keyboard setup to your language keyboard, but the DOSBox built-in keymapper can be used (it's a bit awkward to use, though, and over-complicated for what you are trying to do here).

PimPamPet has given a link to the Chocolate Doom source port, but there is a thread here that gives a lot of different source ports you can use, and of course Google is your friend in finding any of them.

Personally, I use GZDoom. In the past I have used ZDoom, Doomsday and Zandronum, but ultimately I prefer GZDoom. I've never actually played Doom in a vanilla style setup. All of the ports allow you to play it vanilla style if you so wish, but Chocolate Doom was designed to only play it vanilla style, to the point where it retains all the old bugs in the Doom engine from the original game.
thx alot for your help guys...i ll try it next time i ll play the game
