So far I'm loving the classic Doom I and II but part of my nostalgia trip involved the great tense music to set the tone of each map. I am curious as to whether the music is packaged in the GOG release as I am currently unable to hear any. Mind helping me out to get them music back into the game?

Thank you!

SOLUTION: Enter "Launch Settings", select "Choose Music Sound Card", and reselect "Sound Blaster" as my music card to re-initiate music.

I also didn't hear any music! WTF GOG?!
We're investigating this right now.
In the meantime, try saving the game and launching it again.

EDIT:
For the record, there is music in game, I just installed the game on my Win7 and it plays correctly.

I remember in times of yore, the no music problem was caused by not having the CD inserted.

At the moment I cannot replicate the issue, I have music in every install.

I've got The Ultimate Doom from GOG running perfectly with sound and music on my system.
How good is the MIDI Music? I own the Steam Version (that one that came with the BFG Edition). They used a lousy Software Synth.

Can I use Bassmidi with the lovely arachno soundfont at this GOG Version just like I can use it on the other DosBox Games with MIDI Music?

It's possible since I use the Arachno soundfont with Coolsoft VirtualMIDISynth. You need to launch Doom's set-up file, go into the music card settings and select "General MIDI" and it should either use Microsoft GS Wavesynth or BASSMIDI, depending on your OS and MIDI player configuration. (Windows 8 and 8.1 removed the MIDI mapper function, so BASSMIDI or similar MIDI players software takes over Microsoft GS Wavesynth.) Also make sure that DOSBox is able to read your preferred MIDI player. Open up one of the *conf file DOSBox uses for its general settings with a text editor like Notepad or Notepad++, look for the [midi] section, and set "midiconfig=" to either 0 or 1 (0 is usually the default player for BASSMIDI or similar).
Thanks for your reply. I know how to do use soundfonts in DOSBox as long as the Game is vanilla. It's good to hear that the GOG Version doesn't use the horrible GUS emulation synthesizer that is used in the Version of the BFG Edition.

Then it's very likely that I will pull the trigger on this GOG Package!
I'm running Windows 10 x64, and I've downloaded the installer package using GOG downloader. I am not sure if there are any differences between the Galaxy and Downloader versions though.

Restarted my computer. Still no music unfortunately.

UPDATE: Had to manually run settings, "Choose Music Sound Card" and reselect "Sound Blaster" as my music card and I'm hearing music!

Please consider this issue closed for me. Thank you.

If you use a source port you can get pretty much any kind of music you want. I recommend looking into Chocolate Doom, PrBoom+, and ZDoom as they have the most options for rendering MIDI, complete with OPL emulation, GUS emulation, and more. ZDoom especially has a lot of choices. You can also find and download recordings of the Doom music and stream that instead of using MIDI playback, even with Chocolate Doom.
I've already tried zDoom. It was okay and Bassmidi worked.

But I prefer playing old Games as "vanilla" as I can on a modern system. I would even put my old AWE32 and Soundscape Soundcards into my Rig if I could. But as a matter of fact these Soundcards need ISA Slots.

I even thought about buying a SC55 Modul...

I have been playing DOOM since it was first released but these days I tent to use chocolate-doom ( http://www.chocolate-doom.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ ) as it has all the feel of playing under DOS and even pays all the old TC like AlienDOOM, but does not need a IPX rapper for multi player.

I have both an SC-55st and MT-32 hardware synth that I use with DOSBOX with a cheap USB adapter and for me they are worth every penny to me (I think I sent about £100 in total on ebay for both and the usb adapter).

To me as someone who plays DOS games as much as I player newer 3D titles, it was money well sent. I always wanted both as a kid when I had to make do with the PC speaker instead, if you see then going cheap I would grab either or both.

Some games sound better on one and some sound better on the other depending on the age of the game and they are both easy to use with DOSBOX and gog game releases.
Real MIDI hardware is always something special :)

As for the issue that the OP has.

I'm on Windows 10, and by default Doom is configured for General MIDI music, which is much better than Sound Blaster.

It can be improved further by installing VirtualMIDISynth and loading a different sound font. I can recommend the Arachno SoundFont.
