Never mind. It turns out this whole time that what I thought were pistol ammo pickups where actually armor shards. They sure look like some sort of futuristic ammo clip to me.

I didn't notice at first because I usually play without the hud. When I turned it on and played a while looking at the hud every time I picked something up, I realized what was going on,
