I have played the original Doom 3 only one time and that was in 2011. I was very happy when GOG gave Doom 3 BFG and although I was first believing into the negative reviews about the BFG edition I thought “What the Hell, it’s on sale right now and you always wanted to have it, so buy it!”
I just can say that if you have the original Doom95 then screw the Doom 1 and 2 versions of the BFG edition. The mouse control plus the low framerate and the speed down music is just not my thing, plus of course the two Wolfenstein levels that have been scrubbed, due to the German law. You even can play the bonus Doom 2 WAD with a Doom95 port (like ZDoom) and I advise you to use it, although I must say that I have seen better custom WADs in the internet so far.
Now, to the main topic, I have to admit that I like the BFG edition very much. I never missed the flashlight and I have to say that Doom 3 is still extremely dark. Again, I have just played the original one time and that was 7 years ago. Yet, Doom 3 BFG is still dark as the night and there are many places where you see just a totally black screen, if you do not activate your flashlight (take the Alpha labs where you have to guide the “lantern man” to the next ladder). Therefore, I never understood this part of the criticism. Especially as I recall an interview with someone from Bethesda (I think) who said they have taken the critiques about the “no tape on Mars” joke seriously, have discussed about it and finally have added the flashlight mod into the BFG edition, as the majority of players disliked the original flashlight. Yet, as others here already have mentioned, the flashlight is only capable of giving you light for maybe 20-30 seconds before it has to recharge. And there is not one single time in the entire game, plus the addon and the bonus campaign, where you are forced to use it. It's just all about your free will and your personal liking.
I also was never a fan of Mods, so I never cared about the critiques about not being able to make a mod useable with the BFG edition as well, as I just wanted to have fun with the original games, as the developers have given them to us. Also, having the addon plus a small bonus campaign inside was a great gift for me, as I never played them, and I liked them very much too. The BFG edition still gives enormous shooter fun (and plenty of levels if you combine the main game, the addon and the bonus campaign together which is 27+12+8=47 levels!) to me, although I still love to play the classics as well, but, as I mentioned above, only with the “original” Doom95 version.
I don’t know about the masses of ammo, armor shards and healthpacks so far, as I have only bad remembrances of the original version, but I have read somewhere that when you play on the higher difficulties you still find less stuff in the BFG edition, especially on Nightmare, after you have unlocked it. I only have played on “Recruit” so far but want to give the other difficulty levels a try, as soon as I have finished the game again, as I had to reinstall it and therefore have to unlock the Nightmare level first. Unfortunately, right now I cannot say if what I have read is true or not, if there is less stuff to find on the higher difficulties, besides having no healthpacks on Nightmare mode and have to rely on the Soulcube and health stations, while your health keeps dropping to 25 hitpoints via time.
I say it like this, from only my point of view: If you just want some Doom action and want to have a good classic then the BFG edition is pretty worth your trouble. If you were a fan of the original, like many of the people here, and know every hidden Doom 3 monster closet by hard then better don’t look at it. But if you are like me and just want some classic shooter fun and have never played Doom 3 before, or at least plenty of years ago like I did, then give it a try. But do NOT use the Doom 1 and 2 editions of the BFG edition but try to find Doom95 somewhere. It works flawlessly on Windows 7, at least on my system. I did not regret having bought the BFG edition here on GOG but again, that is only my point of view for the BFG edition and I have no idea what I would have written, would I have played Doom 3 for years. But just as it is, I really enjoyed playing the BFG edition, plus the addon and bonus campaign, which both gave me some good gaming evenings too.
