Recently picked up the DOOM games and was looking forward to tearing through the spawn of hell. However, upon entering the game, I found some of the controls a bit dated. Arrow keys to move, mouse didn't turn me, things like that. Does anyone know of a mod or way to change the game to bring the controls a bit more in line with modern FPS controls? I looked at Brutal Doom, but that appears to have a lot of features that I do not want along with the control changing.
Check out ZDoom, it's my favourite source port. Just extract the files to the game directory with the .WAD file and then run zdoom .exe.

Here's a list of some different ports:

Use equivalent of setup.exe / setmain.exe all the way or switch to chocolate-doom.

You can launch the settings program (either through Galaxy or the Start Menu), select "Configure Controller" and change the control bindings for the keyboard and mouse.

For settings closer to common WASD+mouse:
move forward: w
move backward: s
strafe left: a
strafe right: d

Note that moving the mouse forward or backward will still result in the player moving forward or backward. Adjust your difficulty of play accordingly.

There is a way around that for DOSBox. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=134328758

Heh, and here's to thinking I beat Doom, Doom 2 and Final Doom through Steam without that little bit. The information you posted should be stickied, or perhaps a thread be created with all relevent bits of information like that stickied.
The NOVERT tool is a classic :)

I use on my DOS gaming PC, once you set up the keyboard controls, it's like a modern FPS shooter with AWSD + Mouse. So much better.

Brutal Doom is just a mod running on the GZDoom engine. Control changing is a feature of the engine, not of the mod. I suggest trying GZDoom without Brutal Doom. :)

Look at source ports. They're a must-have thing for Doom and Quake games.

My French keyboard works in the setup but not in game, that's strange, I can't move forward or strafe left
