Hi!

I've got a Windows partition on my Mac, but I'm trying to run DD in OS X under Wine just because I like to see this kind of stuff work.

I must be missing some crucial and obvious step. The game installs alright, but when I try to run it, the config tool gives me a completely blank drop-down box (no resolutions are shown) and the game itself won't launch.

I know I'm supposed to use the OLD config tool, but for now I can't even get the game to launch and I'm not sure why.

Am I supposed to be using some specific winetricks or something? The AppDB at WineHQ doesn't mention anything along those lines.

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=3813

Thanks for your help!
Well, I found a workaround. Once I "Enabled Virtual Desktop" in the Graphics tab of winecfg then the game started detecting resolutions and is running just fine. Despite this, you can still set X11 to run fullscreen and sort of "trick" the virtual desktop into being full-screen after all.

The fog and 3D shadows don't work so great on my machine (2009 MacBook Pro). The fog tends to blend with the shadows which gives a shimmering effect when you walk around, and the 3D shadows tend to just pop into existence as you get close to objects in a way that looks badly unrealistic.

This was a fun little experiment, but I think that I'll just play it in Windows after all. :^)

I'm running DD on Linux (Ubuntu 64-bit) using Wine and it runs fine after overcoming the few bugs using the old config tool.
just change the render (play with what works best for you).
I went back to my Windows install of DD and discovered that the fog shimmering is in that version as well.

EDIT: I thought that the shadow popping went away by turning off 3D Shadows but it turns out that's still an issue. It's rather annoying as it looks pretty silly to have shadows appear only after your character moves right up next to the object (trees, etc).

Did you try using the old configtool.exe and set the rendering system to Glide?? See attached.

Also, what version of windows are your running. If it is Vista or Win 7 be sure to right click the game shortcut, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab and check mark "Run this program as an administrator"

BTW, the old configtool.exe is not supported or recommended by Larian Studios or GOG, use at your own risk. . . =)

Thanks for the suggestions!

I am, in fact, already using the old configtool. I also have the game running as an administrator in Win7. I'll have to try the Glide setting to see how that works, but won't I need Glide wrappers installed in that case?

I would assume so but . . . I have not played the game under Wine or using the Glide rendering so I'm not the person to help you with that, sorry. You should get some better responses concerning Wine over the next couple of days.

I would also mention that under Vista / Win 7 it is best to turn UAC off prior to install. Make sure you right click the setup.exe, click Properties and click "Run as an administrator" when you install. I also suggest installing in a directory outside of Program Files as UAC and other security measures can prevent DD from doing a full install which can cause some erratic behavior. . . =)
Just as an FYI for anyone else following this thread...

I tried the nGlide wrapper under Wine http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide.

The performance is bad, but it does get me on par with my Windows experience, which is:
- Shadows behave correctly, they don't "pop in" suddenly like with DDraw or Software under OS X Wine
- The fog shimmers with the tree shadows, just like it does in Windows. I'm starting to wonder if that's just expected behavior.

Seems games released after 1999 do not depend on Glide. DD was released in 2002. I have always set it to DirectDraw rather than Direct 3D for best results on a few systems but . . . all were running Windows OS only.

DD works best with the latest video drivers so you might check for newer versions. I was having problems with DD when I first installed. New drivers helped tremendously. . . =)

Yeah, that makes sense. In the OS X environment, there is no updating the drivers. That's just not how Apple does things. :^)

The problem is, getting updated drivers for the Windows installation on a MacBook is a tricky proposition. I'm pretty sure I have the latest official ones. You can use some community hacks to force install newer drivers, but I had some overheating problems the last time I did that.

Ultimately, I could just live with the fog/shadow shimmer or just turn fog off. Either would be alright.
Guess you will just have to run the game in Linux (Ubuntu for example) using Wine to make it work 100% ;)

But it might also be your hardware.

Seems there was a thread on the General Discussion forum which was all about running GOG games on Wine. I don't have the link at the moment as I'm late but a search of the forum should turn it up. . . =)
