I thought that the Diablo font is unique and you can't use it just like that in another game, so how come the DD series use it? The whole game actually looks like a Diablo clone (I know it's been said before), have they ever gotten sued for it or something?

I seriously doubt that DD uses the actual "Diablo" font even though it may look very similar. I have several fonts installed that also look close to the Diablo font but are not. ( I use them on covers )

I can't answer a question about the Larian Studios being sued as I have no insider knowledge of such things. I do know publishers / devs go to great lengths to avoid using any copyrighted material without having permission to do so. Most likely the fonts used in DD are specifically designed for the game by the devs or the design was sub-contracted to a professional font designer who would avoid any use of copyrighted fonts in his font creations.

The "magic", "medieval", "Gothic" fonts are very popular for RPG fantasy games. Take a look at some of the free fonts offered by dafont.com. Look under the Gothic\Medieval themes and else where as the "ancient" fonts are scattered about.

Some folks make "near" fonts for some popular games but they are not exactly the same or . . the rights owner has released them into the wild or . . . people just start using them without permission which is something a publisher would not do generally. Blizzard would have sued for sure and the game would have been pulled years ago most likely.

The Witcher fonts were actually released in a "Fan Kit" but I have not seen the actual Diablo fonts in the wild other than looks-like attempts since Blizzard keeps a tight grip on their stuff. . . =)

Edit: You got my curiosity roused so I had to look. Maybe the n and a are slightly similar but I would say that the games use two different fonts IMHO. . . =)

Thanks for the lengthy answer - you're right. I've looked at the GOG screenshots only briefly and at first glance they seemed to be almost the same, but now I see they are quite different. It was actually the sixth screenshot that made me think that but compared with the one you posted they do not seem very similar after all.

Although the graphics and overall layout of menu boxes, stats and so on do quite copy Diablo's style, but then other clones were not sued so it makes sense. It's rather the font that surprised me as I haven't seen it in any other previous game I've played (as far as I can recall but like you pointed out, they aren't identical). Maybe it's because I've played mostly well known RPG titles like HOMAM/MM, Baldur's Gate, TES and so on, where the fonts are quite different.

You're welcome, I guess there are not too many variations available for menus that do a very similar job. Diablo used to be my favorite hack and slach but I preferr DD nowadays for several reasons . . . =)

Nothing could be further from the truth. This game has been called a Diablo clone since release, but unfairly in my opinion. While it shares some superficial similarities, such as certain randomness to items and monsters, similar combat, etc. it is in fact a very different game at its core. First of all, there is a lot bigger focus on completing non-combat quests, than in any other so called "diablo clone". Second, there are mostly several ways to complete said quests (often not so obvious ways), Third, the game has clever object interaction mechanics, such as using objects on environment or combining them with each other. Fourth, while there are no social skills besides merchantile, there are still a bunch of social variables, such as your reputation, item ownership etc.

Yeah, it looks pretty good from the reviews, I bought it that day in the end. :)

Actually, if you read my second post in this thread you'll see that I meant how it looks like - I know that it's got all these things that make it different which you wrote.
