I had a bit of trouble getting the widescreen settings in the configuration settings to stick - I'd dial in 1280 x 720, it wouldn't accept it, reverting to the default 1024 x 768.
Turning off the UAC, rebooting, then changing the settings to my desired resolution fixed the problem. Just thought I'd post that for other users who may experience this problem.
Also, I was unable to launch the game until I ran the game as an Administrator.
Gotta love Vista and UAC.....

On Vista/Windows 7 you should always install games outside program files (put them in c:\games\ or something). Spares you from lot of trouble with UAC.

Yeah that'll work too. :P Unfortunately you can't buy new computer with WinXP anymore so people are stuck with Vista or Win7 unless they get XP second hand or use one from their previous computers. Other option is to disable UAC altogether.

XP is aging anyway.

Does that really matter as long as everything works fine on it (better and without hassle unlike on Vista/Win7) and it does everything I want or need?

Well I don't know about about Win7 but my 1 year experience of fixing and solving broblems with my goddaughter's laptop has been horrible to say the least. I believe many of the problems stem from entirely broken UAC as it seem to have been (silently I may add) blocking installation of MS own Windows Live!
Originally about a year ago when my sister bought it for her daughter I tried to install Windows Live (due to MS messager having been integrated to it) but it failed. Problem was there was no error message and installation seemed to go properly from start to finnish but the program icon took me to windows live page as it had been originally and windows update still offered it for download. I tried manual download and install but ran into excact same problem. Running installer as administrator did not work either. I disabled firewall and antivirus - no go. I tried other things as well but nothing worked at the end (I was not aware of UAC at the time and no one mentioned it when I asked.) so I gave up at the time.
Similar problems cropped up over the months with installations and running various programs until few months back I tried disabling UAC as suggested in the internet and you know what? Windows live installed properly straight away (the install process was exactly same except now it actually got installed). I've also not have serious problems with installation or running any applications since (haven't tried any games however). Funny part of the problems is that almost all of the applications I've had installed before were commercial and all had compatible with Vista certification :P and UAC never gave even a beep during any of the installations (it did popup while running some however) so there was no way of knowing what the problem was.
There have been less problems after that but I haven't been asked to install any new prorams so I just have to keep fingers crossed as I've lost too much hair due to that piece of junk OS already. I've probably delt with more problems in single year on that one laptop than on every other computer I've owned or maintained durring my entire life. IMHO the people who developed that abomination should be shot for the good of humanity.
So I hope you don't mind me being a bit negative about Vista on occasion :P ( You do know that VISTA is short of 'Viruses, Infections, Spyware, Trojans, Adware'?) ;) :D

Oh no..I'm equally not a fan of Vista, and I've heard of lots of weird problems like not being able to install WLM, not being able to copy CDs, etc. But I really think Win7 corrects at least most of the mistakes they made.
Perhaps I'm under false impression, but can't UAC not be disabled on Vista without a lot of work? On 7 it's very easy to do. I know they made a lot of changes to it anyway so it's not so intrusive even when it is on. I still found it annoying though...which is weird given there's nothing like it in XP and I think I've had one virus in my life, this before I found a good program. Just my experience, of course..

As I said I did disable the UAC on the laptop following a suggestion from the web few months back and managed to get Windows Live and the other application I've been asked to install installed perfectly. And there certainly I've been called less since but there have been no major applications needing install either so I keep my fingers crossed (there's still problem with windows update never finishing an update and some updates not installing). I have never tried Win7 so I don't know if MS has fixed UAC on it so you may be lucky to have disabled straight from start.
Note that I my self am still happily on an XP Pro computer so I've only been looking into Vista problems when ever I've been called to fix my goddaughters laptop or when I've been trying to find solution someone else have been having with Vista on the net. Had I been forced to get a Vista computer my self (I intentionally bought an XP machine just before MS stopped offering it on standard computers having read problems others had with compatibility with Vista) I'd had looked into cause of problems more and probably found it sooner. I've also not have the time or will to use Vista casually so I've not used it that much outside of fixing any problem it has had so I've not have had change or bothered to find any redeeming features on it if there's any. Most changes, new features and interface have only caused additional frustration (like finding options or features I know well on and use frequently on XP (or even older OS) but have to look for on Vista etc.). Vista is just so functionally different than XP or any of the Win9X OS' before it. It's like jumping from using XP to using MAC or Linux.

I see the resolved but geez i don't see a perfect solution sur edidnt solve my problem.? i have vista i am very used to work-arounds and dealing with its inadequacies but its time people move on with this crap and start solving problems, i usually work with the config file for the game but the crap is still annoying, maybe someone should help us vista gamers out and stop debating the os. it sucks, ok. im broke so its what i got. i am officially tired with this debate and i KNOW windows 7 is a lot better now. gotta love ranting, saw the resolved (gotta hate nto reading) but im leaving this here, I think it needs to be seen. Vista is bad, but its workable. its time people start getting this, Vista is not to be discussed when someone asks for a solution.
Vista is a nightmare but it is a nightmare we can help others with. As late to the topic as i am i hope this gets to others. games are always buggy, I have had more than a million problems that no oen ever solves but just uses to discuss vista, not my problem. I am sick of it. flame away, i don't care.
(on a side note I am NOT slamming any posts just want someone to help the poster and I am not THAT experienced. i see this all the time EVERYWHERE I go. Someone asks for support and it turns into a discussion on how vista sucks or isnt good. I have had UAC off for a year now. I know the usual steps it doesn't ever matter. it doesn't solve almost anything more than start up. its not really ever just those steps that are the problem. its a game, we are gamers. some more than others. lets get support now ok? I know i am going to get so many flames for this.)

I installed dd out o x86 under windows seven 64 and the problems disapeared and I played about one hour without crashes or sound issues, even without using compatibility.
