I seem to be having trouble with finding a good merchant to repair and get good weapons from on the first map of DD. Also, I get all these quests that either I can't do immediately or I'm to weak to do. Any suggestions would be helpful thanks. I see that there isn't much activity in this forum any more...I guess I'm late to the party, hav'n fun though.
Otho the Dwarf in Aleroth can repair for you. The best weapons (cost wise) are found while questing.

Tip: if you're too weak at the start, remember that rabbit meat restores vitality (and getting it can give you XP). :)

I went to see Otho and put my rouges dagger (0/10 dur.) in the slot. I pressed repair. His side showed an anveil and it was red. When I clicked for him to fix he siad are you sure its worth less basically. I clicked yes, but when I looked at it after it was not fixed...help. tu

Somtimes I jump the gun as we americans say. I didn't check the manual first because I find it extremely unthrough. I checked it and saw how I was doing it wrong. I imediately corrected the issue and I'm good thanks for your time. while I have your attention. Is there a place in that general vicinity that I should drop my teleporter stone to be able to sleep/rest and stuff? Thanks again.

I just stayed in Joram's cellar for the beginning of the game (with chests upstairs and down to hold loot, excess food, etc), but you can take over any unoccupied house with a bed. Once you reach the farmlands you can make a hay bed anywhere out of 2 bundles of straw (if made on the ground a hay bed can not be moved, but you can make it in a container or your inventory); IIRC you drag a bundle of straw onto an unbundled pile of straw, or vise versaw (left click on straw to bundle / unbundle it). Eventually you'll probably want to move your stuff out of Aleroth, where you have more space and easier access to a teleporter pad and merchants.

Better merchants can be found in Ars Magicana, to the far east and a bit north of the farmlands. Level 1 of Repair comes in handy so you can fix stuff without having to go to a merchant. I put 2 points in the skill myself and found 3 pieces of equipment my first game with a Repair bonus, which I could use when batch repairing equipment to be sold (I separated loot into low value things to traded for potions, etc, full durability equipment that could be sold when I got access to better merchants and equipment that needed to be repaired (to increase its value).

Meat or bread will heal you a bit, while chicken restores a bit of mana. I didn't bother with other types of food (generally having smallish temporary stat boost effects), once you build up a supply of restoration potions you will not need food or sleep (though at low levels, when your hit points and mana are below 80, individual health and mana potions are more effective).
Don't sweat storing stuff. You can drop things just about anywhere and they'll remain undisturbed. Shoulda seen the huge arms and armor tornado field I left in the starting town; probably upwards of 200 items laying on the ground. I put it conveniently close to a building - that not long into the game becomes unoccupied - in the southern part of town, where I could then sleep if necessary. Anyway, that's where I dumped my stone for quite a while.

Even better is to pick a spot that has a bed (or your straw bed) and is near a teleporter. Ise the stone to return to your bed, drop off the junk, sleep a while, load up with junk, sell the junk to buy potions or whatever it is you may need, teleport back to your stone, and then use the stone to go back to whatever area you were hacking and slashing your way through.

Ditto getting level 1 Repair. That's all you need to repair stuff on the fly, but higher skill level will you let sell items for more money since you'll repair items to a higher state.

Speaking of repairing items. I went ahead and got one point in repair. I chose the skill, left clicked, got an anvail cursor, highlighted a broken item, right clicked and walla, no go, it didn't fix it. Again what am I doing wrong? Thanks for all the help here, making the game much more enjoyable. I use allot of walkthroughs when I play my slew of CRPG's, but I,m using them very little for this one. Man is it tough. Still, I'm enjoying myself. It seems worth the money that I paid for here on GOG.

Also, while I have someones attention, I dropped 1,000 gp's down the wishing well and got myself a skeleton warrior ally. I thought I read somewhere that you can use your mages restoration spell to heal them, again it doesn't work for me. I appreciate any feedback I could get on these subjects.
A couple threads by Stuff, explaining some of the mechanics of using skills, manipulating your inventory, etc.:

I could have sworn the latter thread was stickied, but I guess not. Anyway, there they are.

Poetsword: Speaking of repairing items.
Level 1 of Repair will bring a broken item up to 60% of its maximum durability (rounded down to the nearest integer). If the durability of an item is 6/10 or higher, for example, level 1 isn't going to do anything; if it is 5/10 or lower, it will bring it up to 6/10. If an item has a durability of 1, it needs level 5 Repair to fix (100%).

Experience is arguably the best choice for your wish, or (at 10k gold) a boost to the stat of your choice: the Wishing Well (Spoiler).

I believe if you set Restoration as your secondary skill you can right click directly on an ally to cast it on them (same for Aura of Guarding and SpellShield).

Thanks guys for the help on repair. I still can't figure out how to heal my skeleton warrior. I set my restoration spell in the spell slot and right clicked on him, but that din't work. What in the world is a secondary spot?

Poetsword: What in the world is a secondary spot?
By secondary skill I meant your selected spell, skill or special move (right click); primary being the regular attack (left click).

Like I tried to explain in my earlier reply, I did put restoration in my secondary slot and then I right click on my ally, but all it does is keep healing me not the skeleton. I know I'll feal like a fool when I find out what I am doing wrong :(...he. But, it's just that my ally is starting to get low on his health and I don't wont to loss him just yet.
I knew what you meant. The ability to heal an ally with Restoration may have been removed in the download version of the game. I was going to check that, but got distracted.
