I'm not sure if I'm encountering a bug, but when I go to sell something the gold total on my side of the screen goes down. Also when I exit the trade screen and then go back in, the merchant has far more gold than he should.
Selling seemed to work the first time i did it, but ever since then this keeps happening.
Any clues?

After adding items to your side of the trade window that you want to sell, are you hitting the balance icon on the NPC's side to add the appropriate amount of gold, up to the available limit?
Are you hitting the limit for the amount of gold the NPC has? They wouldn't have more gold immediately in that case, but the total value of their inventory would go up.

Early in the game you will need to stash high value items until you get somewhere with merchants that have more gold. I kept a chest for crappy / broken items to trade with in Aleroth, another with equipment that needed to be repaired to get the most value from, and one will full durability equipment.

I think I might have misunderstood something - is the total at the top left/right of the screen the value of the goods, not the actual money I have? And the little piles of gold in mine and the merchant's inventory are our actual money?
I didn't even notice the little gold piles at first, so I thought the upper left number was my money! No wonder Goemoe loves me, I accidentally sold him an absurdly large amount of axes for virtually no cash 0_0

I really like this game, but man you really need to pay attention.

Yes and yes.

Mid to late game you'll have more gold than you know what to do with (I bought any mage spell books I thought could possibly be useful, playing a warrior, and collected silver charms [gold, late in the game] though I only ever used one, that was a random drop relatively early in the game).

Yea i have played allot of games where you sell stuff, but this simple task was damn hard to figure out in this game. If it was not for that constant warning message making me rethink what the hell is going on i would have done exactly what the OP did!

But once you understand it,,, its actually much more clever a trading system than other games.

But speaking of trading.... i usually have allot of extra items waiting to sell that i store randomly on the map. I have not so far noticed any items disappearing yet in this game.... but in allot of other games i have played, sometimes when the story progresses a map will be changed and i lost all my stored gear..... can that happen at any stage in this game?

Near the end of the game there is a ceremony which will result in a one way trip to the final map area.
Before triggering that, you should finish any open quests that you wish to finish, sell any remaining loot (if you want all the gold you can get), and pick up any chests of charms or extra potions, etc, you wish to keep. If you want to be slightly evil, you can also visit Sir Patrick and borrow money from him; he can't send anyone to collect where you are going.

Oh thanks for that great tip!
