So I'm a decent way into the game (meaning god I don't want to start over), and I've found the game, or at least the Ferol area just bugged out on me. The bottom quarter or so of the Ferol area

What's happening is this, on the automap, all the features (tents, trees, rocks, etc.) are shown, but my character is just running around on brown featureless dirt. This is pretty prominent around the Orc caravan area as in half the the buildings are shown, and the other half are brown dirt (southern half).

Another aspect of this bug is whenever I go underground in the Ferol area is (basements, caves, mine shaft), the area is also brown dirt, with no walls or features. By this I mean I can run clear into the normally inaccessable black areas off the map. Basically the map is bugged out its brain. The best part is my other teleport stone is in the bugged area, meaning I can't pick it up. :\

Is this a common problem, or is there something I can do to save or repair it blah de blah?

Take a look at this post. Seems that saves can be corrupted from time to time. I stopped using Quick Save (CTRL-S) and used only the Save key (S) and have not had any further corruptions.

I would load a previous save if you have one and play on from there. If not, try the above if possible. Someone else may have a better suggestion . . =)

Edit : Also, make sure you have right clicked the game shortcut, clicked Properties, clicked the Compatability tab and check marked "Run this program as an administrator" Not running the game as an admin can cause write problems if not installed outside of program files. See this post for install suggestions

So, I did just replace the world file in my save game with the world file from a new save (different character), and all is well again. I'm massively indebted, thank you. Should I just make this as the solution, or wax the whole thread as I was too lazy to find the solution myself?

The world files keep track of items left directly on the ground, as well as quest opened locations, etc, so replacing these files may result in lost items and re-sealed locations. There are workarounds for any problems this may cause, though.

If you have a previous save where the world was displayed properly, using the world.x0 file from there would be better than from a new save.

Different file extensions are associated with different areas of the game;
.0 / .x0 = Rivertown (Aleroth, Ars Magicana, etc)
.1 / .x1 = Verdistis, Council Hall
.2 / .x2 = Dark Forest
etc

Lost Items - guide and directory of inventory files - you can drop the teleporter stone you have (or stash it in a barrel, etc) and get a replacement set

If any locations get sealed that you need to return to, there are a couple ways to get back in:

FIX for the Missing Catacombs Portal

Teleporting Anywhere, via hex editor

A different, also relatively rare, bug in the disk version with the world files becoming corrupt caused a crash entering the relevant area (Game crashes when I try to return to Verdistis).
