It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

None of those suggestions fixed this, not even turning off hardware acceleration.

It almost sounds like very specific ambient sounds are being replaced by bursts of static. I've heard it with event-triggers, like opening a chest. No idea if this only occurs in town, as I haven't played enough to get out yet. Hard to do when I don't want to hear it.

The only other suggestions I have that might help with this is to try setting the compatibility for different OS's. Right-click the game shortcut, click Properties, then the Compatibility tab. Check mark "Run this program in compatibility for:" and restart and try the game. If no joy, close the game, try then next oldest OS, try the game, the next oldest etc etc.

It might help to install the MS DirectX End-User Runtime if you don't already have it installed since the game works well with the 9.0c version.

I would also ask if you installed DD as an admin by right clicking the setup.exe and clicking "Run as an administrator" in the resulting dialog? Did you install the game in a directory outside of Program Files? If not than I would backup my saves, uninstall the game, delete any remaining DD folder and re-install as an admin in a directory outside of Program files. I use C:\Games. On the first dialog of the installer, click the Options button in the lower left corner to point the install to the directory. You might turn UAC off first and try the game. If the crackling stops than doing the above will probably help since UAC is very aggressive concerning disk read/writes by programs installed in the Program Files directories.

I have no other suggestions if the above doesn't help. I would create a help ticket with GOG support as it may be an issue with that particular netbook that they are aware of. . . =)
