Magically disappeared from my inventory.

Any way to get them back? Savegame editor or something? I genuinely think that reloading a game over several hours ago is stupid.

You need to update your game to v1.0033A (1.0034A) to prevent this from happening. Remember that all ESD releases (1.004A, 1.005A, 1.006A, 1.0061A) are unpatched.

Hold up, I thought the GOG version had the latest patch?
If you stole the lockpicks early and then accepted the quest to steal them, they were put back where you got them, and you can simply go back to the town watch building and steal them again.

If you dropped the lockpick directly on the ground they may have disappeared (though I don't know why you would want to drop them). In that case you can replace them: see Lost Items - guide and directory of inventory files.

Some of the changes and fixes in the original download version of the game were inadvertently lost when the game was patched (to fix a serious new bug), including some of the fixes in some disk version patches. Generally these are minor issues, though, with fixes or workarounds if they are encountered.
FWIW I played half my first game in the unpatched disk version without running into any serious problems. The only reason I installed the hotfix was because the magic lockpicks broke, which is fixed in the download version.

I got them after the quest (I saw "magic lockpicks" in the desk and my brain immediately screamed "quest item") but never dropped them. I just noticed that I cannot see them anymore in my inventory. When I use the lockpick skill I still use a lockpick, and I read somewhere that the magic lockpicks are unbreakable.

Should I just go back to Finnigan and see if I can complete the quest as confirmation?
Did you go back and check the desk again, anyway?

If you complete the quest the lockpicks are gone for good (other than doing the file swap procedure to replace them), so it is better to just leave that quest unfinished. Did you check your quest log? You could talk to Finnigan and see if he has a speech option to complete the quest.

In the original disk version of the game the magic locks were breakable and would disappear if dropped on the ground. The hotfix fixed the problem with them breaking (and would return them to the desk if they had been broke), but not disappearing. A later patch fix corrected the disappearing, and also changed the quest so that you could return the lockpicks and then buy them back (Finnigan was also made a decent merchant, especially for thief type supplies {traps, poison potions, etc)}.
In the download version of the game the lockpicks shouldn't break, but will disappear if dropped on the ground, and you can not complete the quest and buy the lockpicks back.

I checked the desk and they were there. I had thought the GOG version was the latest, but apparently not (?).

For the record, I never dropped the lockpicks, so I have to assume that they broke when I picked a lock... for whatever reason.

Thanks for the tips. I'll just have to be careful with the quest in the future.

Officially GOG has the latest patched version, but in the course of updating the GOG version some previous bug-fixes got left out (also a new bug was introduced - missing music). Larian has acknowleged this little mix-up but hasn't announced any fix for it.

Tarnum in post #2 was suggesting you patch it with files from the patched CD version. Do so at your own risk.
