I simply can't remember this game even though I played it all the way to the end before many years ago. LOL, one good thing about getting old and losing memory I guess, games are never old!!!

But I just wanted to run by what I've done so far, and since I'm stuck, just get a sense for whether I missed something or not. Not looking for anyone to tell me what to do next, just wondering if I forgot to do something I should have before now.

I finished the catacombs quest, and Mardaneus is back to normal. I made it to level 7 or 8. I completed the healing two soldiers quest, the finding the axe quest, the getting herbs for George quest, as well as some others.

Went to sell some stuff and George was dead!!! So now I'm supposed to find his murderer.

This is where I'm stuck. For some reason, even though I can't really remember, my memory is insisting this quest was completed before I left Aleroth last time. Because IIRC it was another quest of some kind that had me leave Aleroth and go outside the gates.

So, did I miss something? It's all good if you give a spoiler or two, but if you can tell me soemething without spoilers that would be the preferred method. I guess I need to know if I missed something and/or if you do indeed need to leave Aleroth to find his killer.

Thanks for any info.

EDIT: Oh, and I seem to have COMPLETELY forgotten what a wonderful game this was as far as atmosphere. I dunno, the graphics, the music, the story, all just seem to mesh perfectly and I find myself getting lost there. And that's what a game is supposed to do. I just had forgotten how well this one did it.

You won't find his killer for a LONG time. He's in a totally different city all the way across the map. If you've cleared out the catacombs, cured the soldiers, and killed Zombie Jake a few times, then you're pretty much good to go.
not fast enough...

Oh boy.

No Jake zombie. Not one. Ever.

So I missed something. Is it important?? LOL, if it is, I guess I'm gonna have to ask for spoilers because I don't know what else I could possibly do in Aleroth that I haven't done already.

Man my memory is bad. I don't remember anything about a Jake zombie.
Question: Would the zombie Jake be that zombie down in near the biginning of the catcombs that wakes up and complains about you waking him and it will be the last thing you ever do (or something like that)???

If that's Jake, then I did find him, but everytime I walked into that "room" he killed me in like two hits. I gave up.

Guess I'll go back and see if that is indeed the zombie Jake.

Along the same lines, the bottom layer, (or next to bottom I guess, before you get to the level where Thyleron is resurrected), had several loose tiles (four to be exact I think). I went down into a couple of them and got my ass handed to me in 2 seconds, so I skipped all of those.

Is that OK or will I be missing something moving forward??

Check out the small graveyard in the north of Aleroth. Jake's house is also near there...
Move the flowers on Jake's wife's grave over to Jake's grave, and he will appear there. Just showing up in his cellar will also trigger an appearance; IIRC there are crates or boxes stacked up on or in front of the hatch to his cellar.
Thanks!!

Boy, that one doesn't seem fair. Who would just think to move flowers from one grave to another?? Oh well, whatever. Thanks again!!
If you read Jake's headstone, it says 'no flowers, especially not from my wife', and then his wife's grave has flowers on it...

P.S. You can skip the 4 rooms at the bottom of the catacombs, though there is good loot in a couple of them. I used the Amulet of Glory (from the room with the spider IIRC) for the rest of the game (though probably would have replaced it late in the game had I not used a gold strength charm in it in order to equip the bastard sword dropped by the knight near stormfist castle). I used Burning Wall to kill the spider, learned from a spell book I found in Mardaneous' house (random loot in bookcase); I could not do much damage otherwise, and if I stood still it only took a couple hits for it to kill me.

Oh yeah, that's right, the tombstone did say something like that.

Ok, yeah, that's a fair hint. Doh!

Did I mention my memory is bad??

Thanks for all of your help. Just having a blast with this game over the past couple of days. I did find and kill zombie Jake (TWICE!!) but I received nothing and no quest was started or completed, so did I miss something again? I did NOT, however, go back down into those four cellars in the catacombs. Maybe a little later....LOL.
There is no quest related to Jake in Aleroth, just the experience for defeating him. Actually, you can defeat Jake on level 1 with a lot of hit and run with a bow, or a moderate amount using MeteorStrike, which would give you enough experience to get to level 3. Defeating him a second time would bring you to level 4.

Jake is involved in a quest later in the game, and when defeated there he is gone for good (even if you didn't defeat him earlier in Aleroth.

Is there some trick to moving the flowers? I've killed Jake in his basement, but I can't seem to pick up (or drag) the flowers.

Also, should I be able to pick herbs and mushrooms, because I can't. I thought I might need a point in alchemy to collect ingredients so I took one, but it hasn't helped. And alchemy isn't much use without ingredients. :(

Concerning the flowers, there shouldn't be any particular trick to it. Click on the flowers that are on the grave of Jake's wife, and drag&drop them on Jake's grave. He'll come out.

As for ingredients for alchemy, you can't pick them up. You use empty flasks on them to create potions on the spot. One point in alchemy will let you mix together potions of the same size. For example, a small health potion and a small mana potion will yield a small white potion that restores 50% of both health and mana. :) If you want to actually make potions yourself - from alchemy ingredients - you will need at least two points in alchemy. I've never invested more than one point in that skill, though. I find it easier to buy and/or find the potions. :) Being able to mix potions together, however, is a must, because white potions are much more powerful than health/mana potions.
Thanks, @Pica-Ludica.

I'm not sure what the issue is, but dragging and dropping is generally funky on my PC (in Divine Divinity, that is, not in other applications). Sometimes, restarting the game helps, sometimes not.

I really appreciate the alchemy tips. I don't think I'd ever have guessed I needed to use bottles on the landscape. Really wish I had a paper manual for this game. I know there's a PDF, but those don't invite browsing in the same way.

If you are standing close enough to a plant when you drag and drop a flask (or stack of flasks) on it, it should be highlighted in flashing white; if you are too far away it will be highlighted with a flashing red tint. Same for the plant on Esmerelda's grave; if it is flashing white when you mouse over the flowers, you should be able to left click drag and drop them; if it is flashing red your character would just move when you try to click on them.

I'll watch for flashing white vs. flashing red, but I think it's an actual glitch, since I've had the problem standing practically on top of a teleport pyramid. I've also had problems allocating fewer than all of my points to one attribute on level up. If I log in and out, it will eventually let me add individual points--and I'd played for quite awhile before the problem occurred at all--but I begin to think the game has taken a dislike to my mouse (a Logitech MX518).
