EDIT: There was originally a paragraph-long rant here, where I acted like an entitled brat. Then I learned that 1.006 hasn't been changed from 1.005 except that it has an updated config tool and features multi-language support (The alternate language packs will come to GOG, apparently).

This is still kind of annoying, as they've done a new release of the game without first fixing the bugs and missing half of the game's music.

rahal: Get the Steam version instead.
Not me - DD is a great game but if the gog version won't be patched then it'll be the first and last Larian game I'll be buying.
@Kezardin - that will be your loss. Divinity 2/Dragon Knight saga is very good if you haven't tried it.

@pbaggers - it would be nice to see clarification on this. What we'd heard before is that the 1.005 build was lost... so why would they recreate the same omissions of the 1.005?

Or did they find it again :confused:
They had to redo the widescreen and higher resolution support, etc, for the 1.006A release. I haven't seen a list of changes or fixes, but believe they just focused on technical issues. It isn't a case of re-creating omissions, just lack of resources to do everything over again.

They didn't redo the changes to the weapon expertise skills, for example, made in the 1.004A release (all skills switched to percentage based damage bonuses) but which reverted to the earlier version with the 1.005A update (ie some percentage based and some fixed range damage).

EDIT: I can not seem to post a new reply, so...

From the corresponding topic in the Larian forum;

"I can understand your confusion - the version on GOG and the version on Steam are different ports due to an accident at Larian that caused us to lose the source code of the GOG version. It's a pretty stupid thing, but sometimes things go wrong. So to make the Steam version, the port to adapt for Windows 7, had to be redone. Therefore, there's no relation between the GOG version and the Steam version, other than they're based on the same original game.

We're going to look at what issues might appear if we release the Steam version on GOG, and if none show up, we'll make it available there too, just to make future updates easier.

Sorry about the confusion."

Not really - I've had my eyes on Ego Draconis, but given my massive backlog of games I won't miss a game I might never play. And Risen, which I haven't played, will fill the niche quite nicely, I think.

Raze if you are able to look into it what I and others would really like to know is if the bug-fixes from older patches up through v1.0034 are included.
Especially "why" the GOG version 1.005A (Steam too??) does not use all of the original soundtrack. I PM'd ET about it and he indicated he would pass the question on to GOG support and Larian . . . never heard another word.

Edit: My questions should be . . Can a V1.006 patch be made to address the soundtrack issue??

Bengeddes;

That is what I've been doing a bit yesterday and today, and will be doing this weekend. I don't have a problem loading disk version saves in the GOG release of the game (some people reported either crashes or subsequent saving being disabled afterwards), so that should help speed up checking things later in the game.

Stuff;

I'm not sure what caused the bug with the music transitions in the GOG version, but hopefully whatever it was wasn't repeated for the 1.006A version. If there are no issues releasing the new version on GOG, that would potentially make a patch for this a moot issue.
In any case I'll be sure to mention this to Larian.
thanks Raze, I think the best way to issue this and make everyone happy is just to replace the GOG version with the newer one on Steam, removing steam APIs if they were introduced in that one. That should really be a no brainer and not more than 15 minutes worth of work for a coder to compile a clean release if steam related code is not already inside #define s
Having a single version would also help new updates and any modding\unifficial content by the community

Just bought the game, having not played it figured it might be worth playing in spite of any problems. Some people report not having any problems. You steam-goers will know if a different version has been posted here?
The GOG is version 1.005A, the Steam version is 1.006A. As described above, the Steam version is basically redoing the widescreen and higher resolution support, and adding support for Win7.

That doesn't sound like much of a difference if I don't have any problems with it on my windows 7.
No, there isn't much difference between the Steam and GOG version. The Steam version has a slightly better configuration tool and dropped support for Win98, but with stuff I was checking over the weekend, the game itself is pretty much the same.
