I haven't been reloading to get better stats on other items but now than I've got to the point of collecting some of the dragon armor pieces I have started to do so. Anyway, I just got through being in Stormfist castle, got the dragon shield, got out of the castle, fought my way through the dungeon, came out in the graveyard and went to identify the shield. I was assuming that since I hadn't examined it yet I would be able to save just outside a shop and reload after identifying it if the result was not good (I haven't invested any points in identify). Then I realised that every time I reloaded and identified the shield I got the same stats. So does anyone know how this works: At what point do the stats of the shield get decided? When you pick it up and it goes in your inventory? When you identify it? I'm not going to play through all that again, but it would be good to know for a later playthrough.

Are you sure you can even get other results for that shield? I recall there are items which have fixed stats, but I may be mistaken, of course (it's been some time I played through the game).

Bokaj: ...
"For most objects you'll find in the game, the type of the object and the statistics of the object will both be random. But for some objects, the type of the object will be fixed, and while the statistics will still be random, the quality of the object will be (relatively) fixed. Listed below are most of those objects. "
