I'm still waiting to buy Original Sin so that I can finish Divine Divinity, but I had a question for you guys who have bought OS already. I've read two reviews now (not that that is a lot) and have been a bit surprised that neither of them have compared Original Sin to Divine Divinity, but rather to Baulder's Gate, Planescape, etc. Of course, that's fine with me; Baulder's Gate and Planecape are great titles to be compared to, but I'm wondering if this game isn't being compared with the original Divinity, is there a reason for that?

It's set in the same universe, right? Is the story subsequent to the original? Is it linked in any way? I know OS now has turn-based combat compared to the original's Diablo-esque click-fest.

I guess to put it simply, is OS in its story and mechanics less a descendant of Divine Divinity and more a descendant of Baulder's Gate than one might expect?
I have not finished D:OS yet so I can't comment on the plot much, but I do know that it is a prequel to DD and set in the same universe. Also you don't need any knowledge of DD to get into D:OS.

DD being Diablo like action combat instead of turn based was a compromise required by the publisher. The original vision for DD was more strategic combat system. D:OS is the game the developer wanted from the get-go that they can make now unfettered by publisher demands thanks to the Kickstarter and Early Access funds.

Is it more like Baulder's Gate than DD? Hmm, I guess a bit, but other than the combat it feels like DD - the skulking around doing whatever you want, getting skill books, putting all your junk in a barrel etc. Odd humor. DD is my all time favorite whit BG series was a close second. Pretty sure you'll like them both, whatever order you play them in.

I think maybe the biggest reason that reviews compare this to BG and not DD is that more readers are familiar with BG.
The ending of D:OS leads into the pre-story of Divine Divinity, and there are some easter egg type references to DD, etc.

The music and atmosphere is similar, as is the writing (though of course more elaborate in D:OS), world interactions, exploration, etc. There are of course some differences (opponent design, lighting), but IMO nothing really dramatic, aside from the turn based combat.

Feedback from friends who are more or less my (advanced) age has made it painfully obvious that I won't be playing D:OS and I hate that a lot. I really wanted to but the difficulty at the beginning even on Easy, being hitched to at least one partner without whom you are probably toast, and the turn-based combat which I've never liked, mean I'd just be wasting my money on a game I couldn't play.

I had such high hopes that D:OS would be more like DD, particularly in using real-time combat, but that's the way it goes, I guess. Back to hunting through GOG's older games where, fortunately, I've found Heretic Kingdoms: The Inquisition. Movement is clunky but the skill system is unusual and interesting and the story has really grabbed me and keeps me hacking and slashing toward the final resolution despite having died...er, a few times.

Still I'm glad for the rest of you that D:OS is finally here on GOG and so many of you are enjoying it!

Thanks, guys. And irondog, you can let your disappointment turn into gladness by gifting me the game instead. ;D

Lol! You have a great sense of humor, Ask me again in a couple of years if you still haven't played it when D:OS is massively discounted and my wallet doesn't go into shock at the idea of buying it to give away. I may not be happy but it's limp with relief. ;D
