I recently bought DD, and ran into a few stumbling blocks while installing it on Windows 7 64-bit. I figured them all out, but the answers are scattered in various places, so I'm collecting them all into one place. These instructions apply to DD 1.005A from gog.com, which is the latest version.

1. Run the installer you downloaded from gog.com. If you wish to avoid UAC problems and skip steps 3 and 4, you can choose to install to a custom location outside of the Program Files directories, such as C:\Games\ or C:\Divine Divinity\ or C:\DD\. You will need to change some of the instructions that follow accordingly.

2. Go to the DD install folder, which for most Vista and Win7 users will be C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Divine Divinity\

3. Right-click div.exe, click the Properties button, choose the Compatibility tab and check the box for "Run this program as an administrator". This will stop the "Unable to write to the installation directory" error that occurs when you attempt to start the game.

4. Right-click configtool.exe, click the Properties button, choose the Compatibility tab and check the box for "Run this program as an administrator". This will make the configtool work instead of doing nothing.

5. Run configtool.exe, choose the resolution you want, and click "OK". To check that it actually worked, open config.div with wordpad and see the first few lines; if it did not change from the default 1024x768, you need to run configtool.exe as an administrator (see step 4).

6. DD may sometimes make a loud static or crackling noise. This is apparently due to DD not playing well with CPU multithreading. This can occur on CPUs with more than one core, or even CPUs with only one core and hyperthreading. The way to fix this is by setting the CPU affinity of DD to a single thread. To do this permanently, download RunFirst and put Runfirst.exe into the DD install folder. Set RunFirst.exe to run as administrator, the same way you did for div.exe and configtool.exe. Now go to the shortcut that you launch DD from (most people would have it on the desktop), right-click the DD shortcut and click Properties. The "Target" box should include the path to div.exe surrounded by quote marks. For example, if you chose to do a standard installation, the "Target" box should look like this:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Divine Divinity\div.exe"

In which case you would change the "Target" line to:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Divine Divinity\RunFirst.exe" "C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Divine Divinity\div.exe"

7. If you are running a really high resolution and would like larger fonts, you may want to use the Font Enlargement Patch DD V2.00, noting that for the GOG.com version you must install to \Fonts instead of \Run\Fonts.

Vista & Windows 7 users can sidestep some problems by installing older games (not just Divine Divinity) into a folder outside of Program Files eg c:\games\

It makes it easier to make changes - for example, if you need to edit files or delete saves manually (through Windows Explorer).
