When I got the game running it was at 1366x768 rez with very high quality and not a bug in sight. Man that felt good. Now I'm stuck again!
I got to the part of the game when you placing the orbs in the scrying room in order to see the different council members. Every time I try to place an orb (except for the wizard orb, which works) the game crashes to the desktop. This doesn't look like a part of the game I can skip.
Running Windows 7 64bit, newest version of divine divinity from gog, no save game editors.
I have tried running using software rendering at the lowest settings, and under directdraw, running under different compatibility modes or no compatibility modes. The game is run as administrator, I went and got my newest video drivers. I tried using RunFirst and setting the process affinity to one of processors. I'm not sure what the problem could be.

This question / problem has been solved by Ralackkimage
Well I managed to scry all the orbs without it crashing, it does cut away on all the others to a screen that shows who you are meant to be looking for. It doesn't do the same for the wizard because hes already in the room so whatever is causing the crash has to do with that cutaway.
I'll upload the save in a bit, just in the process of taking screenshots of the cutaway screens so you know who to look for and all that.
Ok try this

I've included the pictures in a folder called pictures in the .rar file its in the saved games folder as well. It shows all that you will miss by not clicking on those orbs. If you talk tot he wizard guy and go to history you can read all that he said after each cut away and now hes got a ton of options to help you locate these people.
The dwarf says you may need to scry at a later time so if you can't find him yourself and the scy still crashes in the future feel free to quote me in this thread, upload your save again and I'll do that part for you and take some more screen shots.
Edit2: changed out download link.

Thank you!! :) I received the file with no problem. In the mean time I'll be working on a work around in case this happens again.
I did go and compare all the game files in this save to the others in the folder but they were the same except where you would expect them to be different (personal inventory, etc). I did swap out the world.xo from the save game to my earliest save but with no luck.
I am going to wait until gog lets me know they are aware of a problem before I mark it solved because I honestly think they need to release another patch with all the bugs.
Thank you again!
I think the tinkering with these games is part of the fun... at least for me.

No problem, I'm not sure what is causing the problem but like I said it seems to be something either of your computers can't handle with the cut away screens that my computers apparently can.
I tested it out on a windows 7 64 bit computer with an intel q8200 quadcore, 4gb of generic crap ram, zotac 9800gt and a onboard realtek soundcard.
I also tested it out on my windows xp machine which is a pentium 4 3.0ghz, 2gb of corsair ddr2 ram, 6800gt and a creative sound card.
Both of them worked fine without crashing.
Have you got any codec packs or quicktime or anything like that installed on either computer?
Basically the problem is that for some reason I have to install the game under Windows XP and I must also have Direct 3d (the slowest option) enabled during this part of the game. The cool part is that after I did the fresh install on windows XP, I moved the game folder over to my Windows 7 machine and this part of the game works flawlessly as long as Direct3d is on.
Sorry I didn't go about this in a direct way. I blame my broken AC unit (okay, and me).
Thank you so much for trying out my save game and confirming that the problem was not a corrupted save file.
Fixed.
So to recap.
if you have this bug make sure you are rendering using Direct 3d, and if that does not work, try installing the game under XP.

Happy to see that got it to work even if it is a bit of a pain in the ass work around.
Hello everybody !
First I beg your pardon for my english...
So, maybe its too late and I know that problem is solved but I've a more simple solution. It works for me. Use OldDDconfigtool, change renderer to Direct3D temporarily. Now in the game, use "ALT" key to pick up Orbs from floor to inventory. Normally when you click directly on statue to put Orbs there's no more crash. Save between each click if you are not sure.
I hope it will help somebody.

I got Steam Version, i use Direct3D form beggining, my new game. No matter with alt or not, no matter i have orb in eq or not always drop when i clik on statue. I will try to open a game in 1980x1020 but i fear it would not help anyway :(
I go tthis issue with thre gog version, modified with the (indispensable) direct3d patch that removes the slowdown.

I fixed the bug very simply by temporarily switching the game to 800x600 and software mode using the basic config prog that is in the game directory.

Then pop all the orbs ('xcept the dwarf) and reswitch to your glorious resolution.
